Hose Construction
A pressure hose has layers: Inner tube (handles fluid), reinforcement layers (fiber and steel wire for pressure), outer cover (protects against UV and abrasion).
When outer cover abrades, reinforcement layers separate. Pressure bulges weak spot. Hose bursts.
Common failure causes: Dragged across concrete or sharp edges. Stored coiled tight (internal strain). Left in sun (UV degrades rubber). Embedded sand and rocks (abrasion). Pressure spikes (over-pressurization).
Hose Repair Options
Patch (Small Puncture): Small hole, not near coupling. Sand area, apply rubber patch kit, let cure. Cost: $15-30. Lifespan: 3-6 months (not permanent).
Splice (Mid-Hose Damage): Soft spots or minor abrasion, not near couplers. Cut out bad section, splice in new section using coupling adapter. Cost: $40-60. Lifespan: 1-2 years.
Coupling Replacement (Damage at Ends): Hose good but coupling leaking. Replace coupler. Cost: $40-80. Lifespan: Good as new.
Complete Replacement (Severe Damage): Burst, cracked, or multiple soft spots. Replace hose. Cost: $300-500 for 50-100 feet.
Hose Specifications
PSI Rating: Every hose has max PSI. Buy hose rated 500 PSI ABOVE your pump's max. If pump does 3500 PSI, buy 4000 PSI hose.
Hose Diameter: 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2". 3.5 GPM pump uses 3/8" hose. 5.0 GPM pump uses 1/2" hose.
Length: 25, 50, 75, 100 feet. Longer = more friction = lower pressure at nozzle. 100-foot hose at 3000 PSI might deliver 2700 PSI at nozzle.
Material: Wire-reinforced (stronger, durable) vs synthetic fiber (lighter, cheaper). Wire: $150-200 per 50 feet. Synthetic: $80-120 per 50 feet. Heavy commercial use = buy wire. Occasional homeowner = synthetic fine.
Hose Care
Wrap loosely in large loops (tight coils create internal stress). Store in shade (UV degrades rubber). Drain completely before storage. Keep ends covered (dirt in couplers causes pressure leaks). After each use, run water through to flush debris.
Real Pressure Spike Case
Contractor using 3500 PSI machine with 3000 PSI hose (wrong rating—should be 4000 PSI). Spraying wall. Accidentally hit hose end. Kink caused pressure spike. Hose burst. Water hit his leg. Bruise.
If he'd used 4000 PSI hose (rated 500 PSI above pump), spike wouldn't burst it. Extra safety margin saves equipment and prevents injury.
