Know Which AR Pump You Have Before You Buy

AR builds two very different kinds of pump. Axial pumps like the RMV, RMW, and SJV series bolt to consumer machines. The wobble plate and pistons live in one sealed unit, they cost less, and when they wear out you usually replace the whole pump. Triplex plunger pumps like the RCV, RSV, RRV, and XT series are the contractor grade line. Three ceramic plungers, a real crankcase with oil, and every wear part available as a kit. A triplex AR can be rebuilt over and over for a fraction of replacement cost, which is why our parts wall carries more AR seal kits than AR pumps.

Reading an AR Model Number

The code on the data plate tells you most of what you need. Take RCV3G27D: RCV is the series, 3G means 3 GPM, 27 means 2,700 PSI, and D means direct drive. RSV4G40HD reads the same way, a 4 GPM, 4,000 PSI heavy duty pump. The suffix letters describe the flange. F7 and F8 fit electric motor frames, F40 style flanges fit gas engines. Match three things when replacing: the series, the shaft size (3/4 inch for most RCV, 1 inch for RSV gas flange), and the RPM rating. A 3,400 RPM direct drive pump and a 1,450 RPM belt drive pump are not interchangeable even when the GPM matches.

Which Series Fits Your Work

RCV pumps suit 2.5 to 3 GPM machines on smaller gas engines and electric motors, the classic homeowner-plus and light commercial size. RSV pumps carry 4 GPM at 4,000 PSI on 1 inch gas shafts and are the standard swap for 13 HP contractor rigs. RRV and the XT family show up on belt drive and industrial builds where the pump turns slower and lives longer. If the old pump is an axial RMV or RMW and it died young, that is your sign to step up to a triplex instead of buying the same failure twice.

Rebuild or Replace: The Math

An AR water seal kit runs $40 to $90. A new RSV pump runs about $655. If the crankcase is quiet and the plungers are smooth, the kit wins every time. Replace the pump when a plunger is cracked, the crankcase knocks, or rust has eaten the head. Here is what we keep on the shelf for both paths.

Look at what sells from the AR parts wall and the failure pattern is obvious. Water seal kits outsell every other AR part, and almost every set we sell follows the same story: the machine sat pressurized in bypass while the operator moved the truck, talked to a customer, or wound hose. Heat builds in the head and the seals cook in minutes. Kill the trigger, kill the engine. The second seller is oil seals, and the tell is milky oil. Milky oil means water is crossing into the crankcase, and that job needs water seals and oil seals together. Doing one without the other buys you a month, not a fix.

Are AR pumps any good?

The triplex lines hold up well for commercial work and the parts supply is excellent, which matters more over five years than the badge does. The axial consumer models are fine for occasional use but are not built for daily hours.

How do I identify my AR pump model?

Find the data plate or sticker on the crankcase and read the full code, for example RCV3G27D-F8. If the plate is gone, count the head bolts, measure the shaft bore, and bring the pump in. We match orphan pumps at the counter every week.

What do the numbers in an AR model code mean?

The letters name the series, the number before G is flow in GPM, and the pair after it is pressure in hundreds of PSI. So RSV4G40 is an RSV series pump moving 4 GPM at 4,000 PSI.

Can an AR axial pump be rebuilt?

Usually not in any way that pays. Axial units are built as sealed assemblies, and by the time seals fail the plate and pistons are worn too. Triplex models are a different story, with seal kits, piston kits, and valves all sold separately.

What oil goes in an AR triplex pump?

Non-detergent pump crankcase oil, changed after the first 50 hours and then every 250 to 500 hours. Do not run automotive oil, and if the oil looks milky, service the seals before the plungers pay for it.

Will an AR pump bolt onto my machine in place of another brand?

Often yes. Shaft diameter, flange bolt pattern, and RPM are what matter, not the brand on the old pump. Give us those three numbers and we will tell you which AR fits.
