How a Hypro Line Strainer Protects Your Pump

Hypro strainers install on the suction side of the pump, after the tank and before the pump inlet. Water passes through a stainless steel mesh screen inside a nylon or clear bowl, debris stays in the bowl, and clean water moves on. A molded arrow on the cap shows flow direction so there is no guessing at install time. These are low pressure parts, rated 150 PSI at 70 degrees F and 100 PSI at 125 degrees, with a 140 degree temperature ceiling. That means suction side only. Never plumb one downstream of a high pressure pump.

50 Mesh or 80 Mesh

The mesh number counts screen openings per inch, so a higher number means finer filtration. 50 mesh is the standard for pressure washer and sprayer inlets and stops the grit that damages valves. 80 mesh catches finer particles and earns its keep ahead of 12 volt soft wash pumps, chemical injectors, and small orifice nozzles that clog easily. The trade is open screen area. Finer mesh restricts flow sooner as it loads up, so a high flow machine on 80 mesh needs more frequent cleaning or a bigger body to keep the pump from starving.

Clear Bowl or White Bowl

The guts are the same, a nylon cap, stainless screen, and Buna o-ring. The clear polyamide bowl lets you see the screen loading up without unscrewing anything, which is worth real money on a soft wash rig pulling from a tank of mixed chemical. The white nylon bowl costs less and takes jobsite abuse without showing it. Plenty of crews run clear bowls where they can see them and white bowls buried in the skid plumbing.

Find Your Size

Match the port size to your suction plumbing. Necking a 1 inch suction line down to a 1/2 inch filter starves the pump, and a starved pump cavitates.

When a machine fed from a tank starts rattling, surging, or losing pressure, the counter question is always the same: when did you last open the strainer bowl? Nine times out of ten the screen is packed and the pump is cavitating, which hammers the packings a little more every minute it runs. Rinse the screen weekly on dirty water sources and monthly on city water, and keep a spare o-ring in the truck because a dried Buna ring is where these filters pull air. One more habit worth building: crack the bowl loose before winter. Trapped water freezes, and a split bowl in March is the most common Hypro part we replace.

No. These are rated 150 PSI at 70 degrees F and less as temperature rises. They belong on the suction side between the tank and the pump. High pressure filtration is a different part entirely.

How often should the screen be cleaned?

Weekly on tank or pond water, monthly on clean city water, and any time performance drops. The bowl unscrews by hand, the screen rinses clean, and the whole job takes a minute.

What port size do I need?

Match the filter to your suction line size, from 1/2 inch up to 1 1/2 inch FPT. Going smaller than the line restricts flow and can cavitate the pump. If you are unsure, read the size off your bulkhead fitting and call us.
