How a Dual Lance Works

A dual lance is two tubes on one wand. The bottom tube ends in a high pressure nozzle. The top tube ends in a large orifice soap nozzle. A valve at the grip, either a twist knob or a side handle, controls how much water feeds the top tube. Crack the valve open and flow shifts to the big soap orifice, which drops the whole system's pressure. That pressure drop is what wakes up your downstream injector, so chemical starts drawing and you lay down soap. Close the valve and everything routes through the small high pressure nozzle again, pressure climbs, the injector shuts off, and you rinse.

Knob, Side Handle, or Trigger Style

The Suttner ST-53 uses a twist knob at the grip, simple and hard to break. The ST-54 moves the control to a side handle, which doubles as a second grip and saves your wrist on long flatwork days. MTM builds a 40 inch version with a trigger style control for one-handed changes. There is no wrong answer here. Pick the control your hand likes, because you will work it a few hundred times a day.

Length, Material, and Ratings

A 36 to 40 inch lance is the working standard, long enough to keep spray off your boots and short enough for trailers and tight spots. The General Pump ZZDBL comes in 36 and 72 inch versions, and the long one earns its keep on second story siding and gutter lines you would otherwise ladder up to reach. On materials, stainless tubes shrug off house wash chemicals and road salt better than zinc plated steel, and they cost a little more. If you run bleach through your wand regularly, buy stainless once instead of zinc twice. Pressure ratings on the lances we carry run 4000 to 4500 PSI, which covers nearly every cold water rig. The valve is the wear point on every dual lance. O-rings and seats inside it see full system pressure every time you twist, and after a season or two the symptoms show up: the soap tube dribbles during rinse, the valve gets stiff, or water weeps at the grip. None of that means a new lance. A ZZDBL o-ring and seat kit runs $18.76, an ST-53 valve assembly is $20.70, and a complete ST-53 valve replacement is $52.95. We also carry the ST-54 handle assembly and replacement grips, so a ten year old lance can keep earning.

When a customer says their dual lance stopped pulling soap, the lance is innocent more often than not. Run the checks in this order before buying parts. First, open the soap valve all the way, halfway open may not drop pressure enough to fire the injector. Second, confirm the soap nozzle orifice is the right size, because a too-small tip keeps system pressure high and the injector asleep. Third, check the injector itself for a stuck check ball or dried chemical. One more habit worth stealing: blow the lance out before winter storage. Water trapped between the twin tubes freezes, and a split tube is the one failure no kit fixes.

Does a dual lance replace an X-Jet?

They solve different problems. A dual lance works with your downstream injector at normal dilution. An X-Jet draws stronger mix from a bucket and shoots it farther. Plenty of crews run both.
