How the Ignition Circuit Works on a GX Engine
The whole system is simpler than it looks. A magnet on the flywheel sweeps past the ignition coil every revolution. That pass induces voltage in the coil, the coil steps it up to several thousand volts, and the spark plug fires. There is no battery involved on a recoil-start machine. The engine makes its own spark as long as it is turning.
Shutting the engine down works backward. The coil has a small primary wire, usually black, called the kill wire. Ground that wire and the coil cannot build voltage, so spark stops. Two things are allowed to ground it: the on/off switch when you flip it to OFF, and the Oil Alert sensor when crankcase oil drops too low. Understand that one fact and every no-spark diagnosis gets easier, because a dead ignition is always one of two problems. Either the coil cannot make spark, or something is grounding the kill circuit when it should not.
Finding a No-Spark Problem Without Guessing
Work from cheap to expensive and you will rarely replace the wrong part. Start at the plug. Pull it, ground the threads against the valve cover, and crank. A healthy spark is blue and snaps. Orange and lazy counts as weak. No spark at the plug? Try a known good plug before touching anything else, because plugs foul and crack more often than coils die.
Still nothing? Unplug the kill wire at the on/off switch and crank again. If spark comes back, the switch or its wire is grounding the circuit and a part that costs less than lunch fixes it. Next, disconnect the yellow wire at the Oil Alert sensor and repeat the test. Spark returns, the sensor is your problem. Only after the plug, the cap, the switch, and the Oil Alert all check out should you condemn the coil itself.
Two specs worth writing on the shop wall. Coil air gap on GX engines runs about 0.016 of an inch, and a business card folded once gets you close enough. Plug gap on the stock BPR6ES is 0.028 to 0.031 of an inch. A coil that sparks cold but quits when the engine heats up is breaking down internally and will only get worse. Replace it.
The Oil Alert System, Friend and False Alarm
The Oil Alert is a float switch in the crankcase that grounds the kill wire when oil gets low. It has saved more engines than any other part on this page. It also causes the classic ghost problem: the engine dies mid-job, sits ten minutes, and restarts like nothing happened. Oil sloshing away from the float on a sloped driveway will do that. So will a level that is a quarter quart low, or a sensor that is starting to fail. Check the oil first. If it is full and the engine still cuts out, unplug the yellow sensor wire as a test. Run fine with it unplugged and you have found your part. Plug a new sensor back in rather than leaving it bypassed, because the sensor is cheap insurance on an engine that costs hundreds to replace.

The part everyone overlooks is the kill wire itself. It runs from the coil, under the fan shroud, past a hot muffler, on a machine that vibrates for hours. The insulation chafes through, the bare copper kisses the shroud, and the engine dies whenever the wire bounces just right. Owners replace the coil, then the plug, then the carb, and the real fix was a wire that costs about three dollars. If your engine cuts out on rough pavement or when you bump the frame, wiggle that wire before you buy anything. The other habit worth stealing from full-time crews: keep a gapped spare plug taped inside the belt guard. A fouled plug at 8 AM should cost you five minutes, not the morning.

Why does my pressure washer engine have no spark?
Four usual suspects, in order of likelihood: a fouled or cracked spark plug, a kill wire or switch grounding the circuit, a tripped or failing Oil Alert sensor, and last, the ignition coil. Test in that order and you will usually fix it for under ten dollars.
How do I test the ignition coil on a GX390?
Rule out everything cheaper first. Unplug the kill wire and the yellow Oil Alert wire, fit a known good plug, and crank. Still no spark, check the coil air gap, about 0.016 of an inch off the flywheel. If the gap is right and there is still no spark, the coil is done.
What spark plug fits Honda GX160 through GX390 engines?
The stock plug is the NGK BPR6ES, gapped at 0.028 to 0.031 of an inch. The Torch F6RTC is the same heat range at a lower price and runs fine in GX clones. Either way, carry a spare.
What does the Oil Alert sensor actually do?
It is a float switch inside the crankcase. When oil drops below safe level, it grounds the ignition and shuts the engine down before the bearings run dry. A failing sensor can kill a healthy engine at random, which is why it shows up in so many no-start diagnoses.
Can I bypass the Oil Alert to test it?
Yes, unplug the yellow wire at the sensor and crank. If the engine runs clean with it disconnected, replace the sensor. Do not leave it bypassed for good. The five dollar sensor is protecting an engine that costs a few hundred to replace.
Why does my engine die when hot but restart after cooling down?
