Blue or Permanent: Picking the Right Thread Locker

The choice comes down to one question. Will you ever want that fastener back out? Blue is medium strength. It holds against vibration but breaks free with ordinary hand tools, which makes it the default for anything you service, like unloader lock nuts, gun and lance connections that keep loosening, surface cleaner spray bar bolts, and pulley set screws. Permanent grade is the high strength formula. Once cured, it typically takes localized heat in the 450 to 500 F range plus a breaker bar to release. Use it on studs, frame bolts, and assemblies you never plan to open again.

Both grades are anaerobic. They stay liquid in the bottle and only cure once trapped between metal threads with no air, reaching handling strength in about an hour and full strength in roughly 24 hours. That cure window matters. Torque the fastener to spec right after applying, then give the joint a day before putting it back in heavy vibration if you can.

Thread Locker Is Not Thread Sealant

Guys mix these up at the counter every week. Thread locker holds a fastener against rotation. It is not designed to seal pressurized water passing through tapered pipe threads. For sealing hose and pipe connections on your rig, use a proper joint sealant or thread tape. Putting blue thread locker on a leaking quick connect fixes nothing and makes the next repair harder.

Anaerobic adhesive grabs poorly on oily threads, so hit the bolt and the hole with brake cleaner, let them dry, then apply one drop where the nut will sit. More is not better. One drop on the threads where the nut or tapped hole will engage. Flooding the threads wastes product and pushes cured residue into the works. Clean and degrease the threads first or the bond will be weak.

Can I use thread locker to stop a fitting from leaking?

No. Thread locker resists rotation, it does not reliably seal water under pressure. Leaking pipe threads need thread sealant or tape rated for the job. We stock joint sealant made for exactly that.

Is Loxeal comparable to Loctite?

Yes. Loxeal grades cross-reference to the common Loctite numbers, with blue medium strength lining up against the familiar blue 242 and 243 class and the permanent grade against the high strength red class. Same anaerobic chemistry, and the price per ml is usually friendlier.
