How to Match a Gun and Hose Kit to Your Machine

Three numbers decide the right kit: your machine's PSI, its GPM, and the fitting on the pump outlet. Every part downstream of the pump must be rated at or above what the pump puts out. A 4,000 PSI machine needs a gun and hose rated 4,000 PSI or higher. Most contractors go one step further and buy 5,000 PSI guns so a single spare covers every machine on the trailer. Flow matters just as much. Push 8 GPM through a gun built for 5 and the trigger fights back, the gun heats up, and the internals wear out early.

Fittings, where most kit orders go wrong

Check your threads before you order. Homeowner machines mostly use M22 threaded connections, and there are two seat depths, 14mm and 15mm, that look identical on the shelf and leak when mixed. Contractor rigs usually run 3/8" quick connects, with a plug on the gun inlet and a coupler on the hose end. European-built guns and lances, including many Suttner and Mecline models we carry, use 22mm connections. Hose length and diameter

Fifty feet handles driveways, patios, and single-story work close to the machine. One hundred feet lets you walk a full house perimeter without dragging the rig. Diameter drives flow: 1/4" hose suits electric machines and small gas units up to about 3,200 PSI, while 3/8" is the contractor standard because it moves 4 to 8 GPM with less pressure loss. Expect to give up roughly 100 PSI per 100 feet of 3/8" hose at 4 GPM, which is why crews running 200 foot leads size the pump with that loss in mind. Weep guns, dump guns, and hot water ratings

A standard non-weep gun shuts off flow completely when you release the trigger. A weep gun lets a small stream pass at all times so the line cannot freeze, which is why car washes and winter fleet crews use them. A dump gun does the opposite of blocking flow: release the trigger and it diverts water at low pressure instead of dead-heading the pump, a favorite for soft wash and roof work. Heat rating is the spec people skip. Most bargain kits are cold water only, rated around 140 F. If you run a hot water machine, the gun needs a 300 F rating or the seals cook in a week.
