How to Match an Electric Pressure Washer Pump to Your Motor

Gas pump sizing guides skip the two things that actually trip people up on electric builds: motor speed and shaft style. Electric motors come in two common speeds, and a pump built for one will not survive on the other. Here is how to get the match right the first time.

Motor Speed: 3450 RPM or 1725 RPM

Check the motor nameplate before anything else. A 3450 RPM motor needs a pump designed for that speed, like the GP 2SF series. A 1725 RPM motor needs a low-speed pump with larger displacement, like the EZ and FWS series. Bolt a 1725 RPM pump to a 3450 motor and it will cavitate and hammer itself apart. Run a 3450 pump at 1725 and you get half the flow and pressure you paid for. The slower pumps cost more up front because they move more water per revolution, and they last longer for the same reason. Less speed means less heat and less packing wear.

Shaft and Mounting: Solid Flange or Hollow Shaft

Electric pumps mount two ways. Flange-mount pumps slide onto a 5/8" solid motor shaft and bolt to the motor face, which keeps the package short and rigid. Hollow shaft pumps, usually 1 1/8" bore, slip over the motor shaft and clamp in place. The hollow shaft style dominates on 1725 RPM close-coupled builds because it removes the coupler entirely. Measure your motor shaft and check the frame face before ordering. A pump with the wrong bore is a paperweight until you return it.

Sizing the Motor Behind the Pump

Electric motors are rated for continuous duty, so the divisor changes from the gas formula. Use HP = (GPM x PSI) / 1460. A 2 GPM, 2000 PSI pump needs about 2.7 HP at the shaft. A 4 GPM, 3000 PSI pump needs roughly 8 HP, which on single-phase power means serious amp draw. This is why most 120V machines top out near 2 GPM and 2000 PSI. If you want more output than that on electric, plan for a 230V circuit or three-phase power before you buy the pump.

Axial or Triplex on an Electric Build

The AXD series axial pumps come with the unloader and chemical injector already fitted, which makes them the fast, budget way to revive a homeowner-grade electric machine. Expect a few hundred hours of life and treat them as sealed units. Triplex pumps like the 2SF and EZ series cost more, run for thousands of hours, and can be rebuilt with seal and valve kits when they finally wear. For a machine that works every week, the triplex pays for itself the first time you rebuild it instead of replacing it.
