How Pure Water Window Cleaning Works

Tap water carries dissolved minerals, measured as TDS in parts per million. Let that water dry on glass and the minerals stay behind as spots. Strip the TDS to zero and the water dries clean, which is the whole trick. A purification system feeds zero TDS water up the pole to a brush head. You scrub the glass and frame, rinse with the jets, and walk to the next window while it dries on its own.

DI Only or RO/DI: Let Your Tap Water Decide

Test your TDS before you buy anything. A meter costs less than lunch. If your water reads under about 100 ppm, a simple DI tank filled with DI resin gets you to zero and the resin lasts a reasonable time. Most of Maryland reads higher than that, and here is the money math: DI resin exhausts in proportion to the TDS you feed it. Run 250 ppm tap water through straight DI and you burn resin four times faster than the crew across town with softer water. An RO membrane knocks out roughly 95 percent of the minerals first, so the resin only polishes off the remainder. That is why full time crews run a combo unit like the Rival RO/DI cart. The membrane does the heavy lifting and the resin bill drops to a fraction.

Choosing a Water Fed Pole

Buy reach for the buildings you actually service, not the tallest one you can imagine. A 22 foot Tucker Bravo handles two story homes, which is most residential work. A 40 foot carbon fiber pole reaches fourth story glass, and a 50 footer adds a floor beyond that. Material matters more as poles get longer. Carbon fiber costs more than fiberglass but weighs far less and flexes less, and at 40 feet stiffness is the difference between scrubbing and flailing. Round out the head with a gooseneck for angle control and an over the top rinse bar for an even final rinse without streaks.

Most of the window cleaning gear we sell goes to pressure washing contractors, not dedicated window cleaners. The reason is simple. You are already at the house, the customer already trusts you, and glass is the first thing they inspect after a house wash. Quoting windows while you are on site turns one invoice into two. The other pattern we see is resin bought in a panic. Crews run their DI tank until spots show up on a customer's glass, then overnight resin at full freight. Keep a TDS meter on the truck and swap resin when the reading climbs past 10 ppm, not after a callback. Resin on the shelf is cheaper than a redo.

What makes pure water dry without spots?

Spots are minerals left behind when water evaporates. Purified water has had those minerals stripped out, measured as 0 ppm TDS, so there is nothing left on the glass when it dries. No squeegee needed.

Should I buy a DI tank or an RO/DI system?

Check your tap TDS first. Under about 100 ppm, straight DI is fine. Above that, an RO membrane ahead of the resin cuts resin consumption to a fraction, and for daily use it pays for itself fast.

How many stories can I clean from the ground?

A 22 foot pole covers two story homes. A 40 foot carbon fiber pole reaches about four stories, and a 50 footer about five. Past that you are into specialty poles and a different conversation.

How long does DI resin last?

It depends entirely on the TDS you feed it and the gallons you run. High TDS water exhausts resin fast. Watch your meter, and when output creeps past 10 ppm, swap the resin before spots reach a customer's glass.

Is window cleaning a good add-on for a pressure washing business?

It is one of the easiest. You are on site, the customer already knows you, and the startup cost is one pole and a purification system. Many of our contractor customers added it exactly that way.

Why did spots suddenly show up on windows I just cleaned?

Nine times out of ten your resin is spent and TDS crept up. Test the water at the brush. If it reads over 10 ppm, change the resin. Also check that you rinsed with the bar jets and not a dirty brush.
