Fuel Tank Accessories for GX Series Engines

A pressure washer that starts fine, runs a few minutes, then dies is usually starving for fuel, not failing at the carb. The fix often lives on this page. We carry fuel tank accessories for Honda GX and GX-clone engines, from complete tank assemblies down to the three dollar hose that cracks first. Call 301-519-9274 with your engine model and the symptom.

How a GX Fuel System Actually Works

There is no fuel pump on a standard GX160 through GX390. Fuel moves by gravity alone. It leaves the tank through an outlet valve at the bottom, passes a small strainer, runs through a short length of hose, and drops into the carb bowl. Simple systems fail in simple ways, and that is good news for your wallet. Almost every fuel complaint on these engines traces to one of four cheap parts: the tank vent in the gas cap, the outlet valve and its strainer, the joint filter inside the tank, or the hose itself.

The Gas Cap Is a Working Part

The cap does more than keep gas in. Its vent lets air in as fuel drains out. When that vent clogs with dust from the job site, the tank pulls a vacuum, flow slows to a dribble, and the engine surges or stalls after a few minutes of runtime. The classic test takes ten seconds: run the engine with the cap loosened. If it smooths out, you found your problem for under thirteen dollars. We stock both the poly cap and the chrome cap with gaskets for GX160 through GX390.

Outlet Valves, Filters, and Hose

The tank outlet valve is the shutoff at the base of the tank, and its internal strainer is the first filter fuel meets. Old fuel varnish plugs it slowly, so an engine that lost power over months points here. There is also a joint filter where the outlet screws into the tank, and a cup filter in the filler neck that catches debris when you refuel. Check all three before you touch the carburetor. The factory fuel hose on GX240 through GX390 is 4.5mm ID, and after a few seasons of heat and ethanol it hardens, cracks at the clamps, and weeps fuel onto a hot engine. Hose is the cheapest part on this page. Replace it on sight, not on schedule.

Symptom Lookup

Symptom Likely Part Fix Price
Runs then stalls, smooths out with cap loose Clogged cap vent Poly gas cap with gasket $7.12
Slow power loss over months, weak flow at carb Varnished outlet strainer Fuel tank outlet valve assembly $6.16
Cracked, hard, or weeping fuel line Aged hose Fuel hose 4.5mm x 235mm $3.14
Dirt getting past the tank into the carb Missing or torn filter Fuel filter and holder, GX series $3.92
Rust flakes in the carb bowl, rusty tank interior Corroded tank Tank assembly GX160-200 $37.50
Same rust problem on a 13 HP machine Corroded tank Tank assembly GX240-390 $55.72

Both tank assemblies ship complete with cap and filter, so you are not hunting small parts after the swap.

From the Field

The rust story repeats every spring. A machine sits over winter with a half-empty tank, condensation forms on the bare steel above the fuel line, and by March there are orange flakes headed for the carb. Once a tank is rusting inside, cleaning it is a losing fight. The flakes keep coming, and each round costs you a carb cleaning that is worth more than the tank. Swap the tank complete, put fresh hose and a clean filter behind it, and store the machine full with stabilized fuel from then on. Ethanol gas left sitting more than a month is behind most of the varnish we see in outlet valves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my pressure washer engine stall after a few minutes?

Test the gas cap first. Loosen it and run the engine. If it runs clean with the cap loose, the cap vent is clogged and the tank was pulling a vacuum. A new vented cap with gasket fixes it.

Does a GX engine have a fuel pump?

No. GX160 through GX390 engines are gravity fed. Fuel drops from the tank through the outlet valve and hose straight to the carb bowl, which is why a small clog anywhere in that short path shows up as a big running problem.

Where are the fuel filters on a GX fuel tank?

There are three. A cup filter in the filler neck catches debris at fill-up, a joint filter sits where the outlet valve meets the tank, and a strainer lives in the outlet valve itself. Check all three before blaming the carburetor.

What size fuel hose does a GX240 to GX390 use?

Factory hose is 4.5mm inside diameter, and the stock run for these engines is 235mm long. Use proper fuel-rated hose, not vacuum line, and clamp both ends.

Can I clean a rusty fuel tank instead of replacing it?

You can try, but rust comes back and every round of flakes risks a plugged jet. With complete tank assemblies under $60 including cap and filter, replacement is the cheaper path once you count your time.

Poly gas cap or chrome gas cap?

They seal the same. Poly costs less and shrugs off drops. Chrome looks right on a machine you keep clean for customers. Both include the gasket and fit GX160 through GX390 tanks.
