When Steel Beats Brass or Stainless

Fitting material is a pressure and chemistry decision. Plated carbon steel handles 4,000 to 5,000 PSI at pocket-change prices, so it is the right call for plain water discharge plumbing, manifold builds, and anywhere pulsing pressure would eventually stretch a softer metal. Brass machines nicely and never rusts, but at high pressure the small sizes give up before steel does. Stainless costs the most and earns it only when chemicals ride in the line. If the fitting will see soft wash mix, salt, or acids, spend up on stainless steel fittings or poly fittings. For hot, high pressure, plain water, steel is the workhorse.

Reading fitting names without a decoder ring

Everything here uses tapered NPT pipe thread. MPT means the threads are on the outside, FPT means they are on the inside. From there the names describe the job. A nipple is male on both ends and joins two female ports. A coupler is female on both ends and joins two males. A street elbow or street tee has one male and one female end, which lets it thread straight into a port without a nipple, saving space and one leak point. A bushing steps a big female port down to a smaller thread. An adapter changes size the other direction. A cross gives you four ports in one body, which is how a gauge, a thermal relief valve, and a discharge line all share one pump outlet.

Where fittings actually fail

Rated pressure is rarely the problem. Fittings fail at the threads, and almost always for one of three reasons. Someone reefed on a tapered thread until the female side split. Someone skipped sealant and let a micro leak cut a channel through the threads, which steel guys call wire drawing. Or vibration backed a dry joint loose over a season. Match the rating to your machine's maximum PSI, seal every tapered joint, and snug rather than strangle. Two turns past hand tight with sealant is usually right.

Thread sealant done right

Use paste or tape on every NPT joint, but keep the first two threads bare. Tape wrapped over the end of the fitting shears off inside the line, and those shreds end up plugged into your quick connect screens and nozzle orifices. Wrap tape clockwise as you look at the open end, three wraps, and it will not unravel as you thread it in. On joints you open often, paste with PTFE is easier to redo.

Will plated steel fittings rust?

Not quickly on plain water duty. The plating protects the carbon steel underneath. Salt, acids, and soft wash chemicals strip that protection, and rust weeping from the threads means the fitting is due for replacement.

What does street mean on an elbow or tee?

One end is male and the other is female. A street fitting threads directly into a port with no nipple in between, which saves space on crowded pump heads and removes one potential leak point.

Do I use tape or paste on steel fittings?

Either works on NPT threads. Keep the first two threads bare so nothing shears off into the water stream, because tape shreds are a classic cause of plugged nozzles and stuck quick connect screens.
