How to Pick the Right 90 Elbow

Three things decide it: thread configuration, material, and pressure rating. Get all three right and the fitting disappears into the machine for years. Get one wrong and you are back under the frame with a wrench by Friday.

Threads First

Almost all pressure washer plumbing in the US runs NPT pipe thread. A standard 90 elbow has female threads (FPT) on both ends and joins two male fittings or nipples. A male elbow has MPT on both ends and screws straight into two female ports with no nipples needed. If the two ends you are connecting are different sizes, a reducing elbow such as our 3/8" x 1/4" steel reducing elbow makes the turn and the size change in one piece. That is one less joint that can weep. Common sizes on pressure washers are 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2". Material and Pressure Rating

Zinc plated steel is the workhorse for discharge plumbing. It handles ratings up to 5,000 PSI and shrugs off vibration better than brass. Brass machines cleanly, seals easily, and is fine for supply lines, bypass loops, and float tank plumbing where pressure stays low. Stainless steel costs more and earns it anywhere chemical runs through the line. Soft wash mix and degreasers attack brass and plated steel from the inside, so downstream injection plumbing and dedicated chemical lines should get stainless. Whatever the material, the elbow's rating must meet or beat your machine's maximum pressure. A 4,000 PSI machine has no business breathing through a hardware store fitting rated for water pipe.

Inlet Side or Discharge Side

Placement matters more than most people think. On the discharge side, a 90 elbow is close to harmless. On the inlet side, every sharp turn restricts flow into the pump, and a starved pump cavitates. Cavitation sounds like gravel rattling in the head and it chews up valves and packings fast. Keep inlet elbows to a minimum, and when you must turn the line, a larger fitting hurts less. On 7 and 8 GPM machines, plumb the inlet in 1/2" even where the pump port is smaller. The 1/2" FPT zinc plated elbow is the usual pick for that job.

Most elbow leaks we see at the counter come down to sealant, not the fitting. Use paste sealant or three to four wraps of tape, started one thread back from the end. Tape that overhangs the bore shreds loose and ends up plugging quick connect screens and injector orifices downstream. Second lesson: NPT seals by wedging, so tighten until snug plus a turn or two, then stop. Cranking a steel elbow into a brass pump manifold until it bottoms out cracks the port, and now a $5 fitting has cost you a head. Last one: keep a spare 1/4" and 3/8" elbow in the truck box. A cracked fitting at 8 AM should cost you five minutes, not the whole morning.

Do 90 degree elbows cause pressure loss?

On the discharge side the loss is too small to notice on a pressure washer. On the inlet side it matters, because restriction there starves the pump and causes cavitation. Keep inlet bends few, and size up to 1/2" on high GPM machines.

What thread sealant should I use on elbow fittings?

Paste sealant or PTFE tape both work on NPT threads. Start tape one thread back so nothing hangs into the water path. For fittings that see vibration, a wicking thread locker holds better than tape alone.

Should I buy brass, plated steel, or stainless?

Plated steel for high pressure discharge plumbing. Brass for low pressure supply and bypass lines. Stainless anywhere chemical flows, because soft wash mix corrodes the other two from the inside out.

What pressure rating do I need on a 90 elbow?

Can I use a plumbing store elbow on my pressure washer?
