How Garden Hose Quick Couplers Work

A quick coupler set has two halves. The socket screws onto the end of your garden hose. The plug screws onto whatever that hose feeds, usually the pump inlet, a float tank, or an inline water filter. Pull the collar back, push the halves together, let go. Done. Everything we carry uses standard 3/4 inch garden hose thread (GHT), which runs 11.5 threads per inch, so it mates with any normal US spigot, hose, or pressure washer inlet.

Buy brass, not plastic. Supply hoses get dragged across concrete, run over by carts, and cooked in the sun all day. Plastic couplers crack at the collar, and the resulting air leak shows up as a pressure washer that keeps starving for water. Brass shrugs off the abuse and only ever asks for a fresh rubber washer. That washer inside the socket is the entire seal. When a coupler starts dripping, a three dollar washer fixes it. Keep a few spares in the truck because losing one mid-job costs you an hour, not three dollars.

One caution for high flow rigs. Any quick coupler narrows the water path a little. On a 4 GPM machine you will never notice. If you run 5.5 GPM or more and your water source is already marginal, time a bucket fill before and after adding couplers so you know the pump still gets fed.

Do garden hose quick couplers fit every hose?

Yes, as long as the hose uses standard 3/4 inch GHT threads, and nearly every US garden hose does. The socket fits the hose end and the plug fits any male GHT inlet.

Will a quick coupler restrict flow to my pressure washer?

Slightly. The internal passage is a bit smaller than the hose bore. Machines up to about 4 GPM never feel it. Above 5.5 GPM, check your supply with a bucket test to be safe.

Why is my quick coupler leaking?

Nine times out of ten the rubber washer inside the socket is worn or missing. Swap in a new special rubber washer and the drip stops. If the collar no longer locks, the coupler itself is worn out.

Should I buy brass or plastic quick connects?

Brass, every time, for work use. Plastic is fine for watering flower beds, but it cracks under sun, heat, and jobsite abuse. A cracked coupler can suck air and starve your pump.
