What an Unloader Valve Actually Does

Your pump moves the same amount of water whether the gun is open or closed. When you release the trigger, that water has nowhere to go. The unloader senses the pressure change and diverts the flow into a bypass loop that circles back to the pump inlet. The pump keeps turning, the water keeps moving, and nothing bursts. When you squeeze the trigger again, a check ball reseats and full pressure returns to the hose.

The catch is heat. In bypass the same cup of water loops through the pump over and over, and friction warms it a little more each pass. A few minutes of idling with the gun closed can cook pump packings. Pull the trigger every 30 to 60 seconds, or plumb the bypass back to a tank so fresh water enters the loop.

Pressure Actuated vs Flow Actuated

Pressure actuated units, sometimes called trapped pressure unloaders, hold pressure in the hose when the gun closes and use that trapped pressure to shift into bypass. They are simple, cheap, and fine for most rigs, but the trigger takes more effort to reopen against the trapped pressure. Flow actuated unloaders shift when they feel flow stop instead. The hose depressurizes, the gun opens easily, and pressure spikes stay smaller. Crews running long hose lengths or dual wands usually find the flow actuated upgrade worth the money. Units with a built-in microswitch or pressure switch go a step further and shut the motor or burner off in bypass, which is standard practice on hot water machines.

How to Size and Adjust One

Size the valve above your pump, never at its limit. A 4 GPM pump wants an unloader rated 8 GPM or more, because a valve running at the top of its range wears fast and controls poorly. Match the pressure rating the same way. To set it, put a gauge between the pump and hose, start with the adjustment backed off, then turn it down in quarter turns with the gun open until the gauge reads 50 to 100 PSI under the pump's rating. Close the gun and watch the spike. A healthy setup spikes 300 to 400 PSI over spray pressure. Cranking the adjuster past that point does not add cleaning power, it just hammers the pump.

If your machine surges at idle or will not hold pressure, pull the unloader apart before you buy a new one. A pitted seat or a flattened O-ring is a ten dollar fix.
