How to Size a Surface Cleaner to Your Machine

The deck does not clean. Your machine's flow cleans, and the deck just organizes it. The shop rule is 4 to 5 inches of deck per 1 GPM. A 4 GPM machine runs a 16 to 20 inch cleaner well. Put that same machine under a 28 inch deck and the bar spins slow, the pass looks gray, and you end up going over everything twice. Buying a bigger deck than your machine can feed is the most common surface cleaner mistake we see, and it costs people jobs because the finish looks blotchy.

Deck Material: Aluminum, Stainless, or Polymer

Polymer covers keep the price down and the weight low, which suits homeowners and light commercial use. Two Nozzles or Four

Most decks up to 24 inches run a two nozzle bar. Bigger decks offer four nozzle bars, but read the fine print: four nozzles split your flow four ways, so they only make sense on 7 GPM and up. The nozzles themselves are sized as a set. The combined orifice has to match your machine's output, which is why you should never mix one new nozzle with one worn one. Replace them in pairs or the bar cleans unevenly on one side.

Why Your Surface Cleaner Leaves Stripes

Zebra striping has four usual causes. Worn nozzles spray a sloppy fan that misses the overlap. A dragging swivel slows bar RPM so the spiral pattern spreads out. Walking too fast does the same thing. And an underfed deck never builds the bar speed it was designed for. Check nozzles first, they are cheap. If the bar coasts to a stop in a second or two when you let off the trigger, the swivel bearings are going, and a rebuild kit or a new swivel beats replacing the whole unit.
