Know Your Whirl-A-Way Before You Order Parts

BE builds the Whirl-A-Way line in 12", 16", 18", 20", 21", and 24" deck sizes with either an ABS polymer or stainless steel cover. Most parts are size specific, and a few differ between ABS and stainless versions of the same size, so check your deck diameter and cover material before ordering. The machines are rated to 4,000 PSI and about 7 GPM, except the 12" which tops out at 2,500 PSI. Hot water is fine up to 180 degrees F, though stainless decks handle daily hot water work better than ABS over the years.

The Four Parts That Actually Fail

Almost every dead Whirl-A-Way traces back to the same short list. The swivel wears out because it spins thousands of RPM under full pump pressure all day. The nozzles clog or wear open, which kills spin speed and leaves stripes. The rotary arm gets bent from dropping the unit off a trailer, and a bent arm streaks no matter how good your nozzles are. And the trigger gun assembly on top fatigues from being squeezed a few hundred times a day. Everything else on the deck mostly just gets dirty.

Here is the pattern we see at the counter. A guy brings in a surface cleaner that stopped spinning and asks for a new swivel. Half the time the swivel is fine and a plugged nozzle killed the spin, because the arm needs both jets firing to rotate. Pull the tips and check them before spending $200. The other counter lesson is grease. The manual calls for greasing the rotary head every 30 to 40 hours, and the swivels that come in seized are almost always the ones that never saw a grease gun. A $5 tube of light grease is the cheapest insurance this machine can get. Last one: if the deck sat all winter, the Viton o-ring in the rotary head dries out and weeps from the bypass port. Replace the o-ring before condemning the swivel.

Why is my Whirl-A-Way leaving stripes on concrete?

Three usual causes: a plugged or worn nozzle, a bent rotary arm, or moving too fast for your GPM. Check the nozzles first since they cost the least. If the arm is visibly bent, replace it. A 20" arm runs about $24.

Why did the spray bar stop spinning?

The bar spins on jet thrust, so a single clogged nozzle can stall it. Clean the tips first. If the bar still drags, the swivel bearing needs grease or the swivel is worn out. Neglected grease is the top killer of these swivels.

Water is leaking from the top of my surface cleaner. What do I need?

Weeping from the bypass port usually means the Viton o-ring in the rotary head has dried or nicked. Steady leaking under pressure means the swivel assembly itself is done. The o-ring costs a few dollars, the swivel around $213, so check the o-ring first.

How often should the swivel be greased?

Every 30 to 40 hours of run time with a light grease, per the BE manual. For winter storage, pull the hose and oil the swivel internals so the seals do not dry out.

Do parts fit both ABS and stainless steel models?

Some do, some do not. Swivels often cross between sizes, like the one unit that fits 16", 20", and 24" decks, but spray bars and brushes are usually specific to deck size and cover material. Have your model size handy when you call.
