Matching Jetter Hose to the Pipe and the Machine

Diameter comes first. Run 1/8 inch hose in the 1.5 to 4 inch drains inside the house, think sinks, tubs, and washer standpipes, where a fatter hose cannot make the tight bends. Step up to 1/4 inch hose for the 3 to 6 inch main line running from the house to the street. The bigger hose carries more flow, and flow is what carries roots and grease out of the pipe instead of just cutting through them.

Then check two ratings on the jacket. Working pressure must meet or beat your machine's output, so a 4,000 PSI machine needs the 4,350 PSI rated 1/4 inch hose, not the 2,900 PSI 1/8 inch. Temperature matters more than most buyers expect. Cold water pushes grease down the line where it resolidifies. Hot water dissolves it. Our 1/4 inch hoses are rated to 212 degrees F for hot water machines, while the 1/8 inch hose is a 140 degree cold water line. Plan on 4 GPM or more for real jetting work. Low flow machines will propel the hose but leave the debris behind.

Most machines from 2,000 to 4,000 PSI can, as long as the hose rating covers the pressure. The real limit is flow. Around 4 GPM the hose starts flushing debris instead of just drilling through it.

What size hose do I need for a kitchen or tub drain?

Use the 1/8 inch hose. It snakes through 1.5 to 2 inch traps and tight elbows that a 1/4 inch hose cannot turn. Save the 1/4 inch for the main line and outdoor cleanouts.

How does the hose move through the pipe on its own?

The jetter nozzle has rear-facing jets that thrust the hose forward like a small rocket. You feed slack at the cleanout, the nozzle pulls the line downstream, and you clean on the slow pull back.

Do I need hot water to clear a grease clog?

It helps a lot. Cold water shoves grease further down where it hardens again. Our 212 degree rated 1/4 inch hoses handle hot water jetting, which melts grease so it flushes out for good.
