How to Match a Gun and Lance Combo to Your Machine

Every combo carries three ratings: pressure, flow, and temperature. Each one must meet or beat what your machine puts out. A 4 GPM machine running 4,000 PSI needs a gun rated at least 4,000 PSI, and stepping up to a 5,000 PSI gun costs a few dollars more while adding a safety margin that pays for itself the first time an unloader spikes. Temperature is the rating most people skip. Cold water guns are built for about 140 degrees F. Hot water machines need guns and lances rated 250 to 300 degrees, and true steam work calls for a dedicated steam lance built from schedule 80 pipe.

Trigger Gun or Dump Gun

A trigger gun stops flow when you release the trigger, which forces the machine into bypass. That is fine on cold water rigs. A dump gun works differently. Release the trigger and water diverts out a dump port at low pressure instead of dead-heading against a closed valve. Hot water and steam operators run dump guns like the RLW40 with 40 inch stainless wand because trapping 300 degree water behind a shut valve cooks seals and turns the gun into a burn hazard. If your burner runs every day, a dump gun is cheap insurance.

Get the Threads Right

Most American-built machines use a 3/8 inch FPT gun inlet and a 1/4 inch FPT outlet, usually dressed with quick connects. Imported and Karcher-style machines use M22 threads, which the industry calls 22mm. The two do not mix without adapters, and every adapter is one more place to leak. Check your hose end before you buy and the install takes five minutes.

Lance Length and Style

A 24 inch lance is the standard all-around length. Move up to 36 or 46 inches for flatwork and fleet washing, since the extra reach saves your lower back and keeps hot spray farther from your hands. Dual lances put a second barrel and a side handle on the gun so you can twist a grip and drop to low pressure for soap without swapping nozzles. Telescoping wands reach second-story fascia from the ground. Steam lances are their own category, heavy schedule 80 pipe with an insulated handle, and nothing else should be substituted for them on a steam machine.

We sell a $37 repair kit for RLW40 dump guns for a reason. Guns do not usually die all at once. The valve seat wears, the gun starts weeping at the nozzle after you let off the trigger, and operators live with the drip until the pump starts cycling in and out of bypass all day. That cycling kills unloaders and packings that cost far more than the gun. Fix the drip the week it starts. Two more counter tips: never hang the gun by its trigger on the rack, and put a dab of grease on the lance o-ring every few weeks. A dry o-ring is behind half the coupler leaks we see.
