Choosing Deck and Wood Cleaners by Job

Wood restoration is a chemistry sequence, not a single product. Step one removes what is on the wood. Step two neutralizes and brightens. Step three is stain or sealer. Skip step two and step three fails, because stains will not bond to wood left alkaline by a cleaner or stripper.

Cleaner, Stripper, or Brightener

Gray, dirty, bare wood needs a percarbonate style cleaner. It foams oxygen into the surface, lifts dead gray fibers and mildew, and it is far gentler on surrounding grass than bleach. Wood with an old failing stain needs a stripper. Strippers run highly alkaline and dissolve the old finish so it rinses off in sheets. Every deck that got cleaned or stripped then needs a brightener. Brighteners are acid based, usually oxalic or citric, and they do three jobs at once: cancel the alkaline residue, pull out tannin and rust darkening, and open the pores so stain soaks in deep.

Dwell, Pressure, and Moisture Numbers That Matter

Let the chemical do the cutting. Apply cleaner or stripper with a pump sprayer, keep it wet for 10 to 20 minutes, and never let it dry on the wood. Rinse with a 25 or 40 degree tip at the lowest pressure that moves the residue, and keep the wand moving with the grain. If you are fuzzing the surface, you are too close or too hot. After brightening, rinse well and then wait. Wood should dry 24 to 48 hours minimum and read under about 13 percent moisture before any stain goes down. A moisture meter takes the guesswork out of that call and saves a callback when stain peels off damp boards.

The jobs that go sideways almost always share one mistake: somebody treated the stripper like a cleaner or the cleaner like a stripper. A percarbonate cleaner will not touch a cured semi-transparent stain no matter how long it sits, and a strong stripper on bare gray wood is wasted money and extra neutralizing work. Test a small patch first. On strip jobs, budget more product than the label math says, because horizontal boards with layered finish drink stripper. And do not skip the brightener to save twenty minutes. Alkaline residue is invisible, and it quietly kills stain adhesion. The redo costs you a full day plus materials. One more thing on solid stains and paints: chemical strippers struggle with them. If Severe Strip will not move it, the answer is sanding, not a hotter chemical.

Can I just pressure wash a deck without chemicals?

You can, and you will probably regret it. Getting gray wood clean with water alone takes enough pressure to shred the soft grain and leave fuzz and wand marks. Chemicals loosen the dirt and dead fibers so a gentle rinse finishes the job.

Do I really need a brightener after cleaning or stripping?

Yes, every time. Cleaners and strippers leave the wood alkaline. Brightener neutralizes that residue, lightens tannin darkening, and opens the grain so stain penetrates. Stain applied over unneutralized wood fails early.

Is sodium percarbonate better than bleach for wood?

For bare wood cleaning, usually yes. Percarbonate cleans with oxygen, preserves the natural wood color, and is kinder to plants. Bleach is faster on mildew but it can lighten wood unevenly and needs careful rinsing around landscaping.

How long after cleaning can I stain the deck?
