How to Read a 1/4" MEG Nozzle Number

Every MEG nozzle carries a four or five digit stamp, and once you can read it you will never buy the wrong tip again. The first two digits are the spray angle. Everything after that is the orifice size. A 2504 throws a 25 degree fan through a number 4.0 orifice. A 15055 is a 15 degree fan with a 5.5 orifice. The color bands you see on quick connect tips do not apply here, so trust the stamp, not the finish.

The orifice number comes from flow at a reference pressure. A number 4.0 orifice passes about 4 GPM at 4,000 PSI. Bigger number, bigger hole, more flow at less pressure. That single number is what protects your pump, so get it right first and pick the angle second.

Match the Orifice to Your Pump, Not the Other Way Around

A nozzle chart crosses your pump's GPM against the PSI you want at the tip. Run an orifice that is too small and the machine builds pressure past its rating, the unloader lives in bypass, and the water in the pump head heats up until the packings give out. Run one that is too big and pressure falls off a cliff even though the engine sounds fine. When a customer tells us their brand new machine feels weak, the tip is the first thing we check.

Sizing for a surface cleaner is the same math with one extra step. Find the orifice your machine calls for on the chart, divide it by the number of nozzles on the bar, and round up. An 8 GPM machine that charts at a number 8.5 orifice runs two 4.5 tips on a two-nozzle surface cleaner. Undersize them and you will strip your pump instead of your concrete.

Pick the Spray Angle by Surface

0 degree hits hardest and cuts the narrowest path, so save it for spot work on concrete and steel. 15 degree strips paint, gum, and heavy buildup. 25 degree is the workhorse angle for flatwork and general cleaning. 40 degree spreads the impact for siding, wood, and vehicles. 65 degree is the soap angle, built to drop pressure enough for a downstream injector to pull chemical.
