Quick Connect Sizes and What They Actually Flow

Three sizes cover almost every rig. The 1/4" quick connect lives on gun outlets and nozzle holders, and it is where your spray tips snap in. The 3/8" size is the workhorse for hose to reel, hose to gun, and machine to hose connections on contractor equipment. The 1/2" size shows up on high flow setups, 8 GPM and up, where a 3/8" coupler would throttle the pump. That restriction is real. Every quick connect necks the flow path down, so on big machines one undersized coupler in the line can cost you measurable pressure at the nozzle.

Then there is the screw style family. M22 threaded connections, 22mm across, are standard on most consumer machines and a lot of hose ends. Gas machine M22 fittings usually run a 14mm inside seat and electric machines run 15mm, and the two do not seal against each other. Brass, Plated Steel, or Stainless

What size quick connect does my pressure washer use?

Check where the connection lives. Gun outlets and nozzle holders are almost always 1/4". Hose connections on contractor machines are usually 3/8". High flow rigs above 8 GPM move to 1/2". Consumer machines often use M22 threads instead, which adapt over to quick connect with a screw plug adapter.

What is the difference between M22 14mm and M22 15mm?

Both are 22mm threads, but the inner sealing seat differs. Gas pressure washers typically use the 14mm seat and electric machines use 15mm. They thread together but will not seal, so measure the inside diameter before ordering, or bring the fitting in and we will gauge it.

Why does my quick connect leak?

Start with the o-ring in the socket. It is the wear item, and a nicked or flattened one leaks even when fully seated. If a fresh o-ring still leaks, look for a scored plug or a socket that no longer locks all the way. Mixing 14mm and 15mm M22 parts is the other usual suspect.

Are quick connects rated for hot water?

The metal bodies handle hot water fine. The o-ring is the weak point. Swap buna o-rings for viton and a standard coupler runs happily on hot water machines. Viton also stands up to softwash chemicals far better.

Do quick connects reduce pressure or flow?

Each one adds a small restriction, and it compounds on high flow machines. On a 4 GPM rig you will never notice. On an 8 GPM rig, run 1/2" couplers on the supply and hose runs, and keep the count down. Never put an undersized coupler in the main line.

Should the socket go on the hose or on the gun?

Put the socket on the pressure side, so the hose end that stays live is the closed half. The plug goes on the accessory. It is the safe convention, and it also means one socket serves every plug-ended tool on the truck.
