Driveway Cleaning Equipment and Supplies
Flatwork pays by the square foot, and the crew with the right surface cleaner finishes a driveway in half the time it takes with a wand. This page shows you how to match deck size to your machine, what stainless buys you over aluminum, and which parts wear out first. Skip the reading if you want. Call 301-519-9274 with your GPM and we will point you at the right deck in one call.
How to Size a Driveway Surface Cleaner
Deck Width Follows Your GPM
The most common mistake we see is a contractor buying a deck wider than the machine can feed. A surface cleaner only works when both nozzles carry enough flow to lift dirt at walking speed. Starve the deck and you crawl, leave streaks, or both. The working rules: a 3 to 4 GPM machine belongs on an 18 to 20 inch deck. A 5.5 GPM machine runs 20 to 24 inches well. Save the 28 and 30 inch decks for 8 GPM rigs. Pressure matters too, but for driveway concrete the number that sets your pace is flow, not PSI. Most broom finished concrete cleans fine at 3,000 to 3,500 PSI under a rotating bar because the jets never sit still on one spot.
Aluminum vs Stainless Decks
Aluminum decks like the Whisper Wash line weigh less, which your shoulders notice by the fourth driveway of the day. Stainless decks like the Mosmatic Contractor series cost more and shrug off years of chemical exposure, curb strikes, and trailer abuse. For a solo operator doing residential drives, aluminum is the sensible buy. For a crew running the deck forty hours a week, stainless holds resale value and rarely cracks at the handle mounts. Either way, casters beat fixed skids on rough aggregate.
What Wears Out First
Three parts fail long before the deck does. Nozzles wear open, which drops pressure at the surface and shows up as a driveway that looks clean when wet and dirty when dry. Replace tips in pairs about every 100 hours of use. The swivel is next. When it starts leaking from the weep hole or the bar spins lazily at full trigger, rebuild or replace it before it seizes mid job. Third is the rotary arm itself, which gets bent by curbs and expansion joints. All three are cheap compared to a lost Saturday of booked work.

From the Field
Look at what we sell the most of in parts and you learn where driveway rigs break. Swivels like the General Pump 2103221 and rotary arm assemblies outsell whole decks by a wide margin, because contractors run swivels dry of grease until they scream. If your swivel has a zerk fitting, hit it with grease weekly. If it does not, plan on a rebuild once a season. The other lesson from the counter: pressure does not remove oil. Guys burn an hour trying to blast out a petroleum stain that ten minutes of degreaser dwell would have lifted. Treat the chemistry as part of your driveway cleaning equipment, not an afterthought. Pre treat organics, degrease the oil spots, then run the deck, then rinse the slurry off before it dries into a haze.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size pressure washer do I need to clean driveways?
For paid work, 4 GPM at 4,000 PSI is the practical floor. It runs a 20 inch surface cleaner at a steady walking pace. A homeowner can get by with 2.5 to 3 GPM and a smaller deck, it just takes longer.
What PSI is safe for a concrete driveway?
Broom finished concrete handles 3,000 to 3,500 PSI under a surface cleaner without trouble because the jets keep moving. Drop below 2,000 PSI on pavers with sand joints, soft older concrete, or any decorative finish, and test a hidden spot first.
Why does my surface cleaner leave stripes?
Zebra striping usually means worn or mismatched nozzles, walking too fast for your flow, or a deck too wide for your machine. Replace both tips at the same time and slow your pace. If the stripes stay, check the swivel and rotary arm for drag.
Can I use a driveway surface cleaner on asphalt?
Yes, with care. Keep pressure around 1,500 to 2,000 PSI, keep the deck moving, and stay off asphalt on hot afternoons because soft blacktop scars easily.
How do I get oil stains out of a driveway?
Pressure alone will not pull petroleum out of concrete. Pre treat with a degreaser, let it dwell five to ten minutes, then run the surface cleaner over it. Old, deep stains may need a second application or hot water.
Do you carry replacement parts for surface cleaners?
Yes. We carry swivels, rotary arms, nozzles, casters, and skirts for General Pump, Mosmatic, Whisper Wash, and Whirl-A-Way decks. Call 301-519-9274 with your model and we will match the part.
