What Makes a Steam Gun Different

Steam cleaners run the opposite math from pressure washers. Instead of high pressure and moderate heat, they deliver low pressure and serious heat, wet steam in the 300 to 325 degree F range from a typical steam cleaner, and plant steam systems can push superheated water past 400 degrees. Standard trigger guns top out around 300 degrees. Run steam through one and the plastic housing softens, the o-rings cook, and the trigger mechanism sticks, sometimes stuck open. That is why steam guns use all-metal bodies, high-temperature packing instead of soft seals, insulated grips, and a squeeze lever that dumps flow the moment you release it.

Gun, Lance, and Nozzle Together

A working steam rig has three parts downstream of the hose. The gun is the control valve. The lance is a heavy schedule 80 steel barrel, usually 36 to 44 inches, that puts distance between your hands and the heat while directing the stream into the work. The brass steam nozzle on the end shapes the pattern. Because steam expands violently at the orifice, steam nozzles are sized differently from pressure washer tips, and a worn one wastes heat instead of cleaning.
