How to Pick the Right Burner Fuel Pump

Most diesel-fired pressure washer burners use a gear-driven fuel unit that pulls oil from the tank, filters it through an internal strainer, and pushes it to the nozzle at 100 to 150 PSI so it atomizes into a clean flame. Three things have to match when you replace one: the model family, the rotation and mounting, and the solenoid voltage. The Suntec A2VA-7116 is the workhorse on a huge share of machines, rated around 3 GPH at 3450 RPM. The A2 prefix means two stage, which handles the suction lift most skid and trailer tanks need. Beckett CleanCut PF20 units build the fuel solenoid into the pump body and come in 12V for truck-powered rigs, 120V, and 240V. Match the voltage to your machine's control circuit, not to whatever is on the shelf.

Why the Solenoid Matters

The solenoid valve gives the burner a crisp fuel cutoff the instant the control circuit drops out. Without it, oil keeps dribbling to the nozzle after shutdown, and that after-drip is what causes the smoke puff, sooted coils, and stink customers complain about. If your burner smokes at shutdown, test the solenoid and coil before condemning the whole pump. My burner will not fire. Is the fuel pump bad?

Check the cheap stuff first. Empty or contaminated fuel, a plugged filter, a clogged pump strainer, or a dead solenoid coil all mimic a failed pump. If the pump gears turn and it still cannot build 100 PSI or better at the nozzle port, then the pump itself is done.

What do the numbers in A2VA-7116 mean?

The A is the frame family, the 2 means two stage gearing for tank suction lift, and the rest codes the rotation, nozzle position, and options. Two pumps with nearly identical numbers can turn opposite directions, so match the full model number or call us with what is stamped on yours.

Can I just replace the solenoid coil instead of the pump?

Often yes. If the pump builds pressure but fuel never reaches the nozzle, or shutoff got lazy, a $32.60 coil in the correct voltage fixes it. Gray coils are 115V and black coils are 220V on Suntec units.

Should my mobile rig use a 12V or 120V fuel pump?

Whatever your burner control system supplies. Trailer rigs that fire the burner off the truck battery need the 12V CleanCut. Machines that plug into shore power or a generator run 120V or 240V units. The wrong voltage either will not open the solenoid or burns the coil out.

Are waste oil burner pumps different?

Yes. Waste oil is thicker and dirtier than heating fuel, so pumps like the Suntec A2RA-7710 use internals built for it. A standard A2VA on waste oil dies fast. Do not swap the two.

How often should the pump strainer be cleaned?

At least once a season on clean diesel, more often if your tank sits or you buy fuel from cans. The strainer and gasket kit costs $4.99. A starved pump and a no-heat service call cost a lot more.
