Fan Cover & Shrouds

Fan Cover Shrouds

A busted fan cover shroud looks harmless right up until the engine seizes. That stamped cover is what routes cooling air from the flywheel fan across the cylinder fins, and an air-cooled engine has no backup plan. We stock shrouds for Honda GX series engines and for hot water burner assemblies. Not sure which one fits? Call 301-519-9274 with your engine model and we will match it.

Picking the Right Fan Cover Shroud

Match the shroud to the engine family, not the machine brand. Honda stamps the model on the crankcase, GX160 and GX200 for 5.5 and 6.5 HP machines, GX240 and GX270 for the 8 and 9 HP class. The recoil starter bolts to the fan cover on these engines, so a cracked shroud usually shows up when the pull cord assembly gets wobbly or the cover starts rattling against the flywheel. Swap is simple: pull the recoil bolts, lift the old cover, set the new one, done in fifteen minutes with a socket set.

While the cover is off, do the job that actually saves engines. Scrape out the leaves, grass, and mud dauber nests packed between the cylinder fins. A blocked fin bed cooks an engine even with a perfect shroud on top. On hot water rigs there is a second fan to think about. The burner blower has its own cover that keeps fingers and debris out of the blower wheel, and running without it invites a bent wheel and a burner that will not fire clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run a GX engine without the fan cover?

Not for long. The shroud is the duct that forces fan air over the cylinder fins. Without it the air spills sideways, head temperature climbs, and you shorten the engine's life every minute it runs. A $13 to $31 part is cheap next to a $700 engine.

How do I figure out which shroud my engine takes?

Read the model stamped on the engine crankcase or the sticker on the recoil housing. GX160 and GX200 covers look alike but mount differently, so go by the stamp, not by eye. Send us a photo if the sticker is gone and we will identify it.

My pressure washer engine keeps overheating. Is the shroud the problem?

Check three things: a cracked or missing shroud, fins packed with debris under the shroud, and a clogged air filter. Most overheating we see at the counter traces back to fins that have not been cleaned in years.

What does the burner fan cover shroud do on a hot water machine?

It guards the burner blower wheel that feeds combustion air to the fire. A missing cover lets debris reach the wheel, and a damaged wheel throws off the air-fuel balance, which shows up as sooting and rough firing.
