When to Replace Instead of Ignore

A rusted-through muffler is not just loud. It throws hot exhaust gas in new directions, usually at a fuel line, a belt, or the operator's leg. It also drops back pressure out of spec, which can lean the engine slightly and make it run hotter. If the can rattles, shows perforation, or the mounting flange has rotted thin, replace it.
