Easy Start Valves for Pressure Washers

If your gas machine fights you on the second pull, the fix usually costs less than $35. An easy start valve bleeds trapped pressure out of the pump head while you crank, so the engine spins free instead of pulling against a loaded pump. Not sure which rating your rig needs? Call 301-519-9274 and we will match a valve to your unloader in a couple of minutes.

How to Pick the Right Easy Start Valve

These valves go by a few names. Quick start valve, startup relief valve, same part. It threads into the 3/8" bypass port on your unloader or the discharge side of the pump. While you crank, the valve stays open and dumps a small stream of water through its relief outlet. Once the engine hits running speed and flow builds, the valve snaps shut and you get full pressure at the gun. Run a short piece of 1/4" hose off the relief outlet back to your tank or supply so it does not spit water at the frame.

Buying one comes down to two numbers. The pressure rating has to meet or beat your machine's max PSI, and the flow rating has to cover your pump's GPM. Every valve below uses a 3/8" MPT thread, which fits the bypass port on most common unloaders. Big-bore engines gain the most. A 13 HP Honda turning a loaded 4 GPM pump is a hard pull for anyone's shoulder, and an easy start valve takes most of that load off the cord.

One caution for hot water machines. On burners controlled by a pressure switch, a valve that sticks partly open acts like a small nozzle and can let the burner fire with the gun closed. If a valve starts weeping, replace it instead of living with it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an easy start valve do on a pressure washer?

It vents pressure out of the pump head while the engine cranks, then closes once the machine is running. Without it, each pull fights the water trapped between the pump and the closed gun, which is why the cord feels stiff.

Where does the easy start valve install?

Most thread into the 3/8" port on the unloader bypass. Some setups mount it on the pump discharge head. Route a 1/4" hose from the relief outlet back to your tank or inlet side.

Why does my machine get harder to start after a few pulls?

Pressure builds in the head with every pull and has nowhere to go. Squeezing the gun trigger while pulling helps, but an easy start valve does the same job automatically on every start.

How do I know the valve has failed?

Constant dripping from the relief outlet while the machine runs, or pressure loss at the gun, points to a valve stuck open. On hot water rigs this can also make the burner fire when it should not, so swap it promptly.
