Why You Need a Packing Extractor and Not a Screwdriver
Packings sit deep in the manifold bores, and they get tight after a few hundred hours of heat and pressure. The tempting move is to dig them out with a pick or a bent screwdriver. The problem is what you scratch on the way. Those bores are machined brass, and the packing seals against them. One gouge in the wrong spot and the new packings leak from day one, which turns a forty dollar seal job into a manifold replacement that costs more than some pumps.
The extractor works differently. The socket threads into the body of the old packing, a slide hammer attaches to the socket, and a few sharp pulls walk the packing straight out of the bore. No prying, no side load, no contact with the sealing surface. The old packing is trash anyway, so grabbing it by force costs nothing.

A few habits that separate clean packing jobs from repeat ones. Do all three cylinders while the head is off, even if only one is leaking, because the other two are the same age and you do not want the head off twice. Keep one old packing until the job is done, since it confirms the size if there is any doubt about the parts diagram. Inspect every plunger while you are in there, because a scored or cracked ceramic plunger will eat new packings in a week and the extraction kit cannot fix that. And before any of this, confirm the diagnosis: pressure dropping while the machine pulses, or pump oil turning milky, points to packings. Oil weeping at the crankcase points to oil seals, which are a different repair.
