What an X-Jet Does That a Downstream Injector Cannot

A downstream injector mixes chemical into your pressure hose and dilutes it hard, usually 10:1 to 20:1 by the time it hits the wall. An X-Jet works at the other end of the system. It bolts onto the gun and pulls chemical from a bucket you carry with you, so the mix enters the stream inches before it leaves the nozzle. That buys you two things. First, strength. With the right proportioner tip an X-Jet can lay down ratios as rich as 3:1, which turns 12.5 percent sodium hypochlorite into roughly 4 percent on the surface. That is roof cleaning strength, not house wash strength, from the same jug. Second, a clean system. The chemical never touches your pump, unloader, or 150 feet of hose, so there is nothing to flush and nothing corroding between jobs.

The trade is convenience. You drag a bucket around the job, and the hose from bucket to gun is 15 feet. Crews that hate the bucket shuffle go downstream for routine house washes and keep the X-Jet for high reach and hot mixes. Plenty of rigs carry both.

Original X-Jet, M5, or M5DS Twist

The Original X-Jet uses interchangeable sleeves for long range and close range work, and it throws 3 to 5 feet higher than the M5. Pick it when max height matters or when your machine runs under 3.5 GPM. The M5 swaps the sleeves for a twist collar that adjusts the fan from a 5 degree stream to about 60 degrees on the fly, which is why it is the volume seller for soft washing siding. The M5DS Twist is the newer downstream style nozzle for 3 to 7 GPM machines. It shoots roughly 50 feet of chemical reach on a mid-size rig and suits crews that want distance without switching guns. X-Jets are sized by orifice number matched to your flow. A #7 covers 1 to 2.8 GPM, #9 covers 3 to 3.5, #13 covers 4 to 4.5, #16 covers 5 to 6.5, #20 covers 7 to 8, and #25 handles 8.5 GPM and up. Run the wrong orifice and you get a misty, short throw instead of a tight stream. Almost every dead X-Jet that lands on our counter died of the same thing: bleach left sitting in it. Rinse the nozzle, barb, and hose with fresh water at the end of every job. It takes one minute and it is the difference between a nozzle that lasts years and one that corrodes in a season, and corrosion is exactly what the factory warranty does not cover. Keep a spare orifice and a strip of proportioner tips in the truck, because a worn orifice shows up as mist and lost reach right when you are quoting tall work. If the unit stops drawing, hunt for air before you blame the nozzle. A loose hose barb, a half-open ball valve, or a cracked pickup hose kills the siphon every time. Is an X-Jet better than a downstream injector?

Different tools. Downstream wins for convenience on routine house washes because there is no bucket to carry. The X-Jet wins when you need stronger mix on the surface, more vertical reach, or zero chemical in your hose and pump. Ratios as rich as 3:1 are possible with an X-Jet, while downstream typically lands between 10:1 and 20:1.

Why is my X-Jet not pulling chemical?

It is a siphon, so any air leak breaks it. Check that the ball valve is fully open, the hose barb is tight, the proportioner is seated, and the pickup hose has no cracks. If the spray has also gone misty, the orifice is worn or undersized for your machine.

How do I keep an X-Jet from corroding?

Flush it with clean water after every job, especially after sodium hypochlorite. Pull the proportioner, rinse the barb and spring, and let it drain. Corrosion from skipped rinsing is the number one killer and it is excluded from warranty coverage, so the one minute habit pays real money.
