How to Pick the Right High Pressure Elbow

Three things decide it: thread size, thread gender, and material. Nail those and the fitting screws on the first time instead of going back in the mail.

Thread size and gender

Pressure washer plumbing in the US runs on NPT pipe threads, almost always 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2". Here is the part that trips people up: NPT sizes are nominal, not measured. A 3/8" NPT male thread actually measures about 5/8" across the outside. If you measure the threads with a ruler and shop by that number, you will buy the wrong fitting every time. Match the marking on your pump port or old fitting instead, or bring it to the counter and we will gauge it for you.

Gender is simple. MPT means male threads on the outside, FPT means female threads on the inside. A fitting listed as 3/8" MPT x 3/8" FPT has one of each. Both ends female is a standard elbow. One male and one female is a street elbow, and it threads straight into a pump head or manifold port without a close nipple in between. That saves about an inch of stack height, which matters when you are plumbing an unloader in a tight belt drive frame.

Brass, plated steel, or stainless

Zinc plated steel is the workhorse for the discharge side. Our steel elbows are built for high pressure duty, with street patterns rated to 4,000 PSI, and they cost the least. The trade-off is corrosion. On hot water rigs and trailers that live outside, the plating eventually gives up and the fitting rusts.

Stainless costs a few dollars more and shrugs off house wash mix, bleach, and weather. If you soft wash or run hot water, stainless elbows are cheap insurance against a seized, rust-welded joint two years from now.

Standard brass pipe elbows belong on the low pressure side: pump inlets, buffer tank plumbing, and chemical lines. Brass machines easily and seals well, but do not put a general purpose brass pipe fitting downstream of the pump unless its stamped rating covers your machine's PSI. When in doubt, call and we will check the spec.

45 or 90 degrees

Every 90 degree turn adds a little flow restriction and a pressure drop you never get back. One or two elbows on a rig is nothing. Six of them daisy-chained around a frame starts to show up at the nozzle. Where the layout allows it, a single 45 degree street elbow makes a gentler turn than a pair of 90s and cuts the part count in half. Reducing elbows do two jobs at once, turning the line while stepping between sizes, so you skip a separate bushing.

The elbows that come back to our counter tell the same story. Rusted-solid zinc fittings off hot water skids, and cracked brass off the high pressure side where it never belonged. Two habits prevent both. Put stainless anywhere heat or chemical touches the fitting, and keep brass upstream of the pump. One more tip that saves service calls: wrap PTFE tape starting two threads back from the end. Tape on the lead thread shreds, washes downstream, and plugs your nozzle or fouls the unloader check valve. That mystery pressure loss you chased for an hour was a ribbon of tape.

A standard elbow is female on both ends. A street elbow is male on one end and female on the other, so it threads directly into a port without a nipple. Use street elbows where space is tight, like on a pump head or unloader.

Can I use brass elbows on the high pressure side?

Only if the specific fitting is rated for your machine's PSI. Most general purpose brass pipe elbows are meant for the low pressure side, meaning inlets, tanks, and chemical lines. For discharge plumbing, plated steel or stainless rated at 4,000 PSI or better is the safe call.

How do I know what size elbow I need?

Do elbows reduce pressure or flow?

Either works on NPT threads. With tape, start two threads back from the end so shreds cannot wash into the system. Paste sealant rated for high pressure water is less likely to leave debris. Never install NPT threads dry.

Which elbow material lasts longest on a hot water rig?

Stainless steel. Heat and detergents strip zinc plating in a season or two, and rusted fittings seize onto the pump head. Stainless costs a little more up front and comes apart clean at rebuild time.
