Sizing a Sandblast Kit to Your Machine

These kits work on a venturi. Water rips through a carbide orifice, creates suction, and draws dry media up a pickup tube from a bucket or bag. The water does two jobs at once. It carries the abrasive to the surface and it knocks down the dust cloud that makes dry blasting miserable.

The orifice has to match your machine, same as a spray tip. Run a 4.5 orifice on a typical 4 GPM, 4,000 PSI rig. Step up to a 5.0 orifice for higher flow machines. Go too small and you choke the pump into bypass. Go too big and pressure falls off, and with it your cutting speed. Plan on a machine making at least 3 GPM and 2,500 PSI for real stripping work. More pressure cuts faster, and technique does the rest: keep the tip moving, hold a steady distance, and make repeat passes instead of parking on one spot.

Two more things the first-time buyer learns the hard way. Media must stay bone dry, because damp media clumps in the pickup tube and the gun quits pulling. And the nozzle is a wear part. Brass bodies with carbide inserts hold up well, but every pound of abrasive that passes through opens the orifice a little. When stripping slows down, check the nozzle before you blame the machine.

Will a sandblast kit work on my pressure washer?

If it makes about 3 GPM and 2,500 PSI or better, yes. The key is matching the kit's orifice to your flow and pressure so the machine stays out of bypass and keeps its cutting power.

What abrasive media should I run?

Crushed glass, coal slag, or a graded blasting media in the 0.2 to 1.0 mm range. Skip cheap play sand. It is full of fines, and crystalline silica dust is a lung hazard even when wet. Wear a respirator and eye protection regardless of media.

Why did my sandblaster stop pulling media?

Damp media is the usual suspect. It clumps in the pickup tube and kills the venturi suction. Also check for a kinked media hose, a buried or clogged probe, and a worn orifice that no longer makes enough vacuum.

Does wet sandblasting damage the surface underneath?

It can if you camp in one spot. Keep the nozzle moving, start farther back than you think you need, and step in gradually. Soft brick and wood need a light touch or a milder media.
