How a Wet Sandblast Kit Works and How to Size It

The kit replaces your spray nozzle with a blasting head. Water rushing through the orifice creates suction (the venturi effect) that pulls dry sand up a feed hose from a bucket, mixes it into the stream, and throws it at the surface. Because the media travels in water, airborne dust drops dramatically compared to dry blasting. Crews use these kits for rust on trailers and railings, peeling paint, graffiti on masonry, and knocking mill scale off steel before coating.

Sizing matters more than anything else on this page. The orifice in the blasting head works exactly like a spray nozzle orifice. Match it to your machine's flow. A 4.5 orifice suits machines around 4 GPM, and a 5.0 orifice suits machines around 5 GPM. Go too small and you spike system pressure and put the machine into bypass. Go too big and pressure falls off so far the sand just dribbles at the surface. Plan on a machine that makes at least 2.5 to 3 GPM and 2,500 PSI or better, because blasting performance comes from flow and pressure together.

Nozzle material decides how long the kit lasts. Abrasive eats brass, so a straight brass head is the budget option for occasional jobs. A carbide insert stands up to constant abrasive impact and is the piece to buy if you blast weekly. Field Notes on Media and Technique

Use coarse, bone dry blasting media, never play sand or beach sand. Damp sand is the number one reason kits clog, so keep the bucket covered, set it a couple feet off the ground, and keep the suction hose from kinking. Wear a respirator anyway. Wet blasting knocks down dust but silica is nothing to gamble with. And plan your rust inhibitor before you start, because bare steel that leaves a wet blast flash rusts within the hour. Rinse the surface, then treat it right away.
