Why Electric Pressure Washers Need GFCI Protection

A ground fault circuit interrupter compares the current going out on the hot wire with the current coming back on the neutral. If about 5 milliamps goes missing, meaning it found another path such as through water or through you, the device cuts power in a fraction of a second. That threshold is far below the current that stops a heart, which is why every electric washer sold in the US ships with GFCI protection on the cord. It is safety equipment, not a convenience feature. When one fails, you replace it. You do not cut it off and wire on a standard plug.

Matching a Replacement to Your Machine

Read the nameplate on the motor, then match three numbers. Voltage first: most homeowner and light commercial electric washers run 115 to 125V, while larger commercial units run 230V. Amperage second: the replacement must be rated at or above the nameplate draw, which is why we stock 15A, 20A, and 30A versions. Wire gauge third: 14-3 cord handles 15A, 12/3 handles 20A, and 10/3 handles 30A. An undersized cord drops voltage under load, the motor pulls extra current to compensate, and everything runs hot. If your existing cord is fine and only the head failed, a user attachable inline GFCI or a right angle GFCI plug rebuilds it for less than a full cord assembly. Right angle plugs also solve the clearance problem at wall outlets where a straight plug sticks out into traffic.

Real Trip or Nuisance Trip

A GFCI that trips is doing its job. The question is what it found. Moisture inside the plug or the receptacle is the most common cause, and a day of drying out often clears it. A long, thin extension cord is the next suspect, since voltage drop makes motors run hot and leaky. If the unit trips instantly on every outlet, including ones that run other tools fine, the leak is in the machine: worn motor windings or chafed cord insulation letting current bleed to ground. A meter check between the cord prongs and bare metal on the frame will usually find it. Replacing the GFCI to silence a machine that is genuinely leaking current defeats the one device standing between you and the fault.

Keep the connection up off the wet ground, on a hook or over a rail, and these units last for years instead of seasons. Two more counter notes: press the test button monthly, because a GFCI is a mechanical device and it can fail without warning. And budget for the honest diagnosis. If your washer trips every GFCI it meets, the $240 cord is not the fix, the motor is. We would rather tell you that before you buy than after.

Can I run an electric pressure washer on an extension cord?

Manufacturers discourage it, and long thin cords are the top cause of hot motors and nuisance trips. If you must, keep it short, use 12 gauge outdoor rated cord, and plug the GFCI end into the wall side.
