An electric motor either matches your pump or it burns up trying. We stock Baldor pressure washer motors from 1.5 to 10 HP plus Beckett burner motors for hot water machines, and we size them against your pump specs before anything ships. Sizing an Electric Motor for a Pressure Washer Pump
Electric motors are rated honestly, so the math is simple. Required HP = (GPM x PSI) / 1460. A 2 GPM pump at 1,500 PSI needs about 2 HP. A 4 GPM pump at 2,000 PSI needs around 5.5 HP, which is why serious electric rigs run 230V or three phase. Undersizing is the classic mistake. An overloaded motor pulls high amps, runs hot, and trips breakers until the windings finally cook. Buy the HP the pump demands, not the HP that fits the budget.
RPM and Frame: Get Both Right
Motors come in two common speeds. A 3450 RPM motor couples directly to pumps rated for that speed, which keeps the package small and cheap. A 1725 RPM motor pairs with 1450 to 1750 RPM pumps, runs quieter, and stretches pump life because everything moves at half the speed. Then match the frame. C-face motors, like the 56C and 184TC patterns on our Baldor units, bolt straight to a pump adapter with a 5/8 inch or 3/4 inch shaft. If the frame or shaft is wrong, no amount of hardware store creativity fixes it safely.
ODP or TEFC Around Water
ODP means open drip proof. Vents in the housing let air through, which cools well but also lets in mist and overspray. TEFC means totally enclosed, fan cooled. The sealed housing shrugs off washdown environments, which is why we push TEFC models like the Baldor PCL351 for carwash bays and wet rooms. ODP is fine when the motor lives somewhere dry. Put an ODP motor next to a spray arch and you are buying its replacement early.

Half the motors we sell replace units that died from the environment, not from work. Overspray into ODP vents, a burner motor caked in soot, a motor mounted where the hose gets coiled on top of it. Spend the extra on TEFC when the motor lives in the spray zone and mount it high and dry when you can. The other half of our motor sales come with a story about breakers. If your breaker trips at startup, the circuit is too small or the motor is overloaded by the pump. Bigger breakers are not the fix. The right motor is.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many HP does my electric pressure washer motor need?
Multiply pump GPM by PSI and divide by 1460. A 3 GPM, 2,500 PSI pump needs about 5 HP. Round up to the next available motor size, never down.
Why does my pressure washer motor keep tripping the breaker?
Electric motors pull several times their running amps at startup. A 2 HP motor on 120V draws close to the full capacity of a 20 amp circuit, and anything larger needs 230V. If the breaker trips after running a while, the motor is likely overloaded by the pump or starved by a long, thin extension cord.
Should I buy an ODP or TEFC motor?
TEFC for any spot that catches spray, steam, or heavy dust. ODP only where the motor stays dry. The TEFC premium is small compared to replacing a shorted motor mid-season.
What does C-face mean on a motor?
A C-face motor has a machined mounting face with threaded bolt holes around the shaft, so a pump or adapter bolts straight to it in perfect alignment. Common pressure washer frames are 56C, 184TC, and 215TC. Match the frame and shaft size to your pump adapter before ordering.
Can I use any 3450 RPM motor to replace my burner motor?
No. Burner motors like the Beckett units use a specific flange, shaft, and rotation, and many need the matching capacitor. Swap in the correct burner motor or the fuel unit will not couple and the burner will not fire right.
Is a 1725 RPM motor better than a 3450 RPM motor?
Better for longevity, worse for size and price. The slow motor needs roughly twice the physical frame per HP, but it turns a 1450 to 1750 RPM pump that runs cooler and lasts longer. Production shops usually go slow speed. Occasional users usually do fine at 3450.
