Picking the Right Whirl-A-Way Size

Size the deck to your flow, not your ambition. The two nozzles on the spinning spray bar have to wet the full cleaning path, and a deck that outruns your GPM leaves streaks no matter how slow you walk. The working rule from our counter: a 4 GPM machine handles up to 18", and save the 20" and larger decks for 5 GPM and up. A 12" unit fits pool decks, steps, and tight walkways where a big housing cannot reach.

The design is simple on purpose. An ABS polymer housing keeps weight around 30 pounds, a bristle ring skirts the base to hold down overspray, and a swivel feeds the two-nozzle bar. Most sizes are rated to 4,000 PSI and 180°F, so they run fine behind hot water machines within that limit. The 20" model adds four castors, which your wrists will thank you for by the end of a parking garage.

The part that fails first on almost every surface cleaner is the swivel seal, not the housing and not the bar. When water starts weeping out of the top of the deck, a seal kit and an hour of bench time bring it back for a fraction of replacement cost. The second most common complaint, streaking, is usually worn spray nozzles that have opened up past spec. Nozzles are cheap. Replace them on a schedule instead of waiting for the pattern to tell you. And store the unit upright, because water sitting in the bearing is how a smooth swivel turns into a growling one over the winter.
