Sonin Moisture Test Tool - Know Before You Stain
Staining wood that is still wet is the fastest way to ruin a deck job. The finish will not penetrate, it sits on the surface, and you are back out there redoing it. This meter tells you in one second whether the boards are ready.
Press the two contact pins to the wood and read the LEDs. Four lights, no dials, no interpretation. It works on hardwood, softwood, drywall, plaster, concrete, and carpet, so it earns its keep well beyond deck season.

How to Use It on a Deck
- Wash and wait. After cleaning, give the wood 48 to 72 hours to dry. Longer in cool or humid weather.
- Test several spots. Check the shaded side, the north face, and anywhere water pools. Those dry last and they are what will fail.
- Read it. Most penetrating stains, Ready Seal included, want 12% moisture content or less before you apply.
- Wait if it reads high. A day of patience beats a callback.
Note on range: this meter starts reading at 14%. If it shows no lights, the wood is below its detection floor, which is the reading you want before staining. If you need an exact number at the low end, step up to a digital meter and give us a call.
