Pressure Washer Hoses
A pressure washer hose is the part of your rig that fails at the worst possible moment, usually two hours into a job and forty minutes from the shop. Sun Brite Supply stocks pressure washer hoses in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch, rated 3,000 to 6,000 PSI, in 25 to 500 foot lengths, in Gaithersburg, MD. Tell us your GPM, your pump pressure and how far you need to reach, and we will hand you the right hose the first time. Call 301-519-9274.
How to Choose a Pressure Washer Hose
Four numbers decide it: inside diameter, pressure rating, length, and the fittings on the ends. Get those right and the hose disappears into the background of the job, which is exactly what you want from it.
Inside Diameter Follows Your Flow
Hose ID is about flow, not pressure. Undersize the ID and you choke the machine, lose pressure at the gun, and cook the pump in bypass. The rule of thumb contractors use:
- 1/4 inch — up to about 4 GPM, short runs, homeowner and light commercial machines.
- 3/8 inch — 4 to 8 GPM. This is the working standard for contractor rigs and what most of our hose ships as.
- 1/2 inch — 8 GPM and up, or any long run where you cannot afford the pressure drop.
Length costs you pressure. Every 100 feet of hose drops flow and pressure at the gun, and the smaller the ID the worse it gets. If you routinely run 200 feet or more off the reel, step up one size rather than fighting the loss.
Pressure Rating: Buy Above Your Pump
Never match the hose rating to the pump rating. Buy above it. A 4,000 PSI machine belongs on 4,000 PSI hose at minimum, and 6,000 PSI hose if the rig ever sees a turbo nozzle or a plugged tip spike. Hose fails at the fitting under fatigue, not usually in the middle, and headroom is what buys you the extra seasons.
One wire braid is the standard construction up to roughly 4,000 PSI. Two wire braid carries the 4,500 and 6,000 PSI ratings, is stiffer to handle, and takes far more abuse across concrete edges and truck tailgates.
Cover, Color and Non-Marking
Color is not cosmetic. Non-marking gray is what you drag across a customer's white concrete, pool deck or painted porch without leaving black rubber streaks you then have to clean off. Black hose is tougher and cheaper and belongs on shop work, fleet washing and anything where the surface does not care. Blue and colored covers are mostly identification, useful when a crew runs three lines off one trailer and needs to know which is which at a glance.
Wrapped cover hose has a textile finish that resists abrasion better on rough surfaces. Smooth cover pulls off a reel and around corners with less drag. Neither is wrong, they just fail differently.
Heat
Standard pressure washer hose is rated for warm water, not hot. If you run a hot water machine, a hot box, or anything producing steam, you need hose built for the temperature. See hot water and steam hoses, rated to 250 and 350 degrees. Putting cold water hose on a hot machine is one of the more common and more dangerous mistakes we see at the counter.
Ends and Fittings
Hose comes two ways: assembled with fittings, or as bulk roll that you or we crimp to length. Assembled hose with quick connect ends is the fast answer. Bulk rolls of 300 to 500 feet are how production crews buy, because you cut exactly the lengths your jobs need and you are not paying for factory ends you will cut off anyway. We crimp hose at the Gaithersburg counter.
Reference Table
| What you run | Hose ID | Minimum rating | Cover |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homeowner or light commercial, under 4 GPM | 1/4 in | 3,000 PSI | Gray or black |
| Contractor cold water, 4–5.5 GPM | 3/8 in | 4,000 PSI | Non-marking gray |
| High production, 8 GPM | 3/8 or 1/2 in | 4,500–6,000 PSI | Two wire, wrapped |
| Long runs over 200 ft | 1/2 in | 4,000 PSI | Either |
| Hot water or steam | 3/8 in | 3,000 PSI, 250–350°F | See steam hose |
| Soft wash, low pressure chemical | 1/2 or 5/8 in | 300 PSI | Chemical rated |
| Gun to lance whip | 3/8 in | 4,500 PSI | Short whip line |
From the Field
Hoses almost never die in the middle. They die within a foot of the fitting, where the hose flexes every time you pull the reel. Three habits buy you years. Do not yank the hose to move the machine — that load goes straight into the crimp. Do not leave hose coiled in the sun with pressure trapped in it, because the trapped water expands and works the ends. And when a hose starts weeping a pinhole spray, take it out of service that day; a 4,000 PSI pinhole will cut skin, and the failure that follows is rarely gradual.
Keep a spare 50 footer on the truck. The customers who buy one from us in a panic on a Tuesday afternoon almost always buy the spare on the way out.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size pressure washer hose do I need?
Match ID to flow. Under 4 GPM, 1/4 inch works. From 4 to 8 GPM, use 3/8 inch, which is the contractor standard. At 8 GPM or on runs over 200 feet, move to 1/2 inch so you are not losing pressure to the hose itself.
What PSI hose do I need for my pressure washer?
At least your machine's rating, and preferably above it. A 4,000 PSI machine should run 4,000 PSI hose minimum; 6,000 PSI hose if you use turbo nozzles. Headroom is what keeps the fitting from fatiguing early.
What is non-marking pressure washer hose?
Hose with a cover compounded not to leave black rubber streaks when it drags across concrete, pool decks or painted surfaces. Gray non-marking hose is what most residential contractors run so they are not cleaning up after their own hose.
Can I use a regular pressure washer hose with hot water?
No. Standard hose is rated for warm water only. Hot water machines, hot boxes and steam require hose rated to 250 or 350 degrees. Running cold water hose hot shortens its life fast and can fail under pressure.
How long can a pressure washer hose be before I lose pressure?
You lose some pressure over any length, and it compounds with smaller ID. Most crews run 100 to 200 feet on 3/8 inch without a meaningful complaint. Past 200 feet, step up to 1/2 inch rather than accepting the drop.
What is the difference between one wire and two wire braid hose?
One wire braid covers ratings up to roughly 4,000 PSI and handles easily. Two wire braid carries 4,500 and 6,000 PSI ratings, resists abrasion and crushing far better, and is noticeably stiffer to coil.
Do you sell bulk hose by the roll?
Yes. We stock 300, 450 and 500 foot rolls, and we crimp fittings at the counter so you can cut the exact lengths your jobs need.
Do you make custom hose assemblies?
Yes. Bring or name the length and end fittings you want and we will build it. Call 301-519-9274 Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
