Sand, grit, and debris in your water supply will destroy a triplex pump faster than any other problem. Small particles pass through the inlet, get trapped between the plungers and packing, and grind away at the seals on every stroke. This 1-inch clear bowl water filter catches contaminants before they reach your pump.

The clear bowl lets you see the condition of the screen at a glance without disassembling anything. When the bowl starts filling with sediment, you unscrew it, rinse the screen, and put it back. Takes 30 seconds and prevents hundreds of dollars in pump damage.

Why Every Pressure Washer Needs an Inlet Filter

City water from a spigot is not as clean as you think. Old pipes shed rust flakes. Construction work upstream stirs up sediment. Well water carries sand and mineral particles. Even a garden hose that has been sitting in the sun grows algae and biofilm inside that breaks loose in chunks. All of this gets pulled into your pump without an inlet filter.

If you are pulling water from a buffer tank, the filter is even more critical. Buffer tanks collect debris from whatever fills them, whether that is a hydrant, a pond fill, or a customer's garden hose. A tank-fed system without an inlet filter is almost guaranteed to ingest contaminants.

50 Mesh vs. 80 Mesh: Which Do You Need

Mesh number refers to the number of openings per linear inch in the screen. Higher numbers mean finer filtration. A 50-mesh screen catches larger particles like sand, pipe scale, and organic debris. An 80-mesh screen catches finer particles but also restricts flow more and requires more frequent cleaning.

For most pressure washing applications, 50 mesh provides the right balance between protection and flow. It catches the particles large enough to damage pump components while allowing enough flow to keep your pump properly supplied. If you are running on well water with very fine silt, 80 mesh may be worth the tradeoff of more frequent cleaning.

Installation

Install the filter on the inlet (suction) side of your pump, between the water supply and the pump inlet port. The 1" FPT threads on both ends connect to standard 1" male pipe thread fittings. Use PTFE thread tape on all connections.

Mount the filter in a position where the clear bowl is visible and accessible. You need to be able to see the bowl to monitor sediment buildup, and you need to reach it to unscrew the bowl for cleaning. Most contractors mount the filter on the trailer frame near the pump, either vertically or at a slight angle with the bowl facing down for easy draining.

Make sure the flow arrow on the filter body points in the direction of water flow (toward the pump). Installing it backward will not filter effectively and may cause flow restriction issues.

Maintenance

Check before every job. Glance at the clear bowl before you start the machine. If you can see sediment building up on the screen, clean it before it restricts flow enough to starve your pump.

Clean the screen regularly. Unscrew the bowl, pull out the screen, and rinse it with clean water. A soft brush will remove particles stuck in the mesh. Inspect the screen for tears or damage. A torn screen is worse than no screen because it gives you a false sense of protection while letting debris through.

Replace the bowl if it cracks or becomes opaque. Polycarbonate bowls can crack from UV exposure, impact, or over-tightening. A cracked bowl will leak under pressure. Replacement bowls are available separately.

Will this filter restrict water flow to my pump?

Not when the screen is clean. A clean 50-mesh screen passes water freely. Flow restriction only becomes an issue when the screen is clogged with debris, which is why regular cleaning is important.

Can I use this with a buffer tank setup?

Absolutely. Install it between the tank outlet and the pump inlet. Buffer tank systems benefit most from filtration because the tank collects debris from multiple fill sources.

How often do I need to clean the screen?

It depends on your water quality. On clean city water, you might go weeks between cleanings. On well water or when filling from a hydrant that stirs up sediment, you might need to clean it between every job.

What happens if the screen clogs while I am washing?

A clogged screen starves your pump of water. You will notice a drop in pressure, pulsing at the gun, and the pump may start cavitating (making a loud rattling sound). Stop immediately, clean the screen, and resume. Running a pump with inadequate water supply causes overheating and accelerated wear.
