Poly Hose Mender for Garden Hose Repair

Hose menders are a barbed fitting that inserts into both cut ends of a hose. You slide the barbed ends into each side of the cut hose and secure with hose clamps. How to Use a Hose Mender

1. Cut the hose. Cut out the damaged section of hose, making clean, straight cuts on both sides. A sharp utility knife works for soft hose. High-pressure hose with wire braid may need a hose cutting tool or a reciprocating saw.
2. Slide on clamps. Before inserting the mender, slide a hose clamp onto each end of the cut hose. You need to get these on before the mender is installed because you cannot slide them on afterward.
3. Insert the mender. Push one barbed end of the mender into one hose end, then push the other barbed end into the other hose end. The barbs grip the inside wall of the hose and resist pull-out under pressure.
4. Tighten clamps. Slide the hose clamps up to the mender and tighten them firmly. The clamps compress the hose against the barbs for a secure, leak-free connection.
5. Test. Turn on the water and check for leaks at both clamp points before resuming full-pressure operation.

When to Repair vs. When to Replace

A hose mender is an excellent solution for a single burst or cut in an otherwise good hose. If the hose has multiple weak points, is showing wire braid exposure in several places, or has been repaired before, it is time for a full replacement. Each splice point is slightly weaker than the original hose, and multiple splices in a short run create a maintenance headache.

For high-pressure hose, a barbed mender is a field repair that gets you through the day. For a permanent fix on high-pressure hose, consider having the hose professionally re-crimped with proper fittings, or replace the hose entirely.

For low-pressure hose (garden hose, chemical hose, soft wash hose), a barbed mender with clamps is a permanent repair that will hold for the life of the hose.

Can I use a poly mender on high-pressure hose?
