Nozzle tips are the most replaced part on any pressure washing rig, and they should be. A worn nozzle loses its spray pattern, drops pressure at the surface, and turns a 30-minute driveway into a 45-minute driveway. These stainless steel quick connect nozzle tips plug into any standard 1/4" QC socket on your wand, surface cleaner, or spray bar, and they are color-coded by spray angle so you grab the right tip every time without reading tiny numbers stamped into metal.

Whether you are replacing the tips inside your surface cleaner's spray bar, swapping between fan angles on your wand for different jobs, or restocking your nozzle kit for the season, these tips are the industry standard used by contractors across every segment of pressure washing.

Color Code System

Every pressure washer nozzle tip follows a universal color code based on spray angle. Knowing the colors means you can identify any tip at a glance, even from across the trailer.

  • Red – 0 Degree: Pencil jet. Maximum impact force in a single point. Used for stubborn stains, removing paint, and cleaning in tight spots where you need concentrated force. Use with extreme caution on soft surfaces.
  • Yellow – 15 Degree: Narrow fan. High impact over a small area. Common for heavy concrete cleaning, stripping, and tough stain removal.
  • Green – 25 Degree: Medium fan. The most versatile angle for general pressure washing. Works for driveways, siding, decks, and most everyday cleaning tasks.
  • White – 40 Degree: Wide fan. Lower impact, broader coverage. Ideal for rinsing, delicate surfaces, and applying chemical at low pressure.
  • Black – 65 Degree (Soap): Widest fan. Designed for downstream chemical application. The wide angle drops pressure below the threshold needed to activate the downstream injector, pulling chemical into the water stream.

How to Choose the Right Orifice Size

The orifice size of your nozzle determines how much water flows through it at a given pressure. Choosing the wrong size either starves your pump (orifice too small, pressure spikes, bypass valve opens, pump overheats) or wastes pressure (orifice too large, PSI drops below effective cleaning range).

The orifice number (like 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5) corresponds to the diameter of the opening in the tip. Larger numbers mean more flow and less pressure at the surface. Smaller numbers mean less flow and more pressure.

To select the correct size, you need your pump's rated GPM. For a 4 GPM machine, a 4.0 orifice at 25 degrees will give you approximately rated PSI. Going to a 3.5 will increase pressure slightly, while a 4.5 will decrease it. Your pump manufacturer's nozzle chart will give you exact PSI numbers for each combination.

For surface cleaners with two tips on the spray bar, divide your GPM by 2 to determine the per-nozzle flow, then select an orifice size for that reduced flow rate. A 4 GPM machine with a two-nozzle surface cleaner would use tips sized for 2 GPM each.

When to Replace Your Nozzle Tips

Nozzle tips are consumables. The stainless steel orifice wears over time from the abrasive effect of high-velocity water, and the spray pattern gradually changes from a crisp fan to a rounded, less effective pattern. Here are the signs that your tips need replacing:

  • Reduced cleaning power: If you are having to make more passes or move slower to get the same results, your nozzles are likely worn.
  • Irregular spray pattern: A new tip produces a clean, even fan. A worn tip produces a ragged or uneven pattern with heavy spots and light spots.
  • Lower gauge pressure: A worn orifice is effectively larger, which drops system pressure. If your gauge shows lower PSI than normal with the same nozzle, the tip is worn.
  • Surface cleaner streaking: If your surface cleaner is leaving streaks or lines that it did not leave before, the spray bar tips are worn unevenly.

Most commercial contractors replace nozzle tips every few hundred hours of use, or at the beginning of each season at minimum. Tips are inexpensive, and fresh nozzles make a noticeable difference in cleaning performance.

Surface Cleaner Nozzle Replacement

The nozzles inside your rotary surface cleaner are critical to its performance. Surface cleaners typically use two or three 1/8" MEG (minimum effective gap) threaded nozzles mounted on the spray bar inside the shroud. These tips spin at high speed and take more wear than wand tips because they operate continuously under the cleaner.

If your surface cleaner is leaving lines, not cleaning as aggressively, or making unusual noises, check the spray bar tips first. Unscrew the old tips, inspect for wear, and replace with matching angle and orifice size tips.

Can I use the same nozzle for every job?

You can, but you should not. Different jobs call for different spray angles. A 25-degree green tip works for most general cleaning, but you will get better results using a 15-degree yellow for heavy concrete work and a 40-degree white for rinsing and delicate surfaces. Keep a set of each angle on your rig.

Are these the same nozzles that go inside my surface cleaner?

How do I know if I need a bigger or smaller orifice?
