The Super Swivel 5014 is a 90-degree high pressure swivel rated to 5,000 PSI with 3/8" female pipe thread connections on both sides. Where This Swivel Goes on Your Rig
Hose reel inlet. This is the primary installation point. The swivel threads into the reel's inlet port, and the hose (or a short nipple leading to the hose) threads into the other side. As the drum rotates to pay out or wind up hose, the swivel lets the inlet fitting stay stationary while the drum turns. Without it, the hose wraps around the inlet fitting and binds.
Hose reel outlet. Some reel configurations also benefit from a swivel at the outlet — the point where the hose exits the reel and connects to the main run. This is especially useful on reels with a center-fed design where the hose exits through the axle.
Between gun and hose. A swivel at the gun connection lets you rotate the gun without twisting the hose. This is a different application from the reel swivel, but the same product works. Contractors who use long wands or surface cleaners especially benefit from a swivel at the gun.
Surface cleaner connections. Surface cleaners spin at high speed and need a swivel at the water inlet to prevent the supply hose from twisting as the cleaner head rotates. The 90-degree configuration works well here because it directs the hose away from the cleaner body.
Installation
Apply PTFE thread sealant tape to both male fittings before threading them into the swivel's FPT ports. Use three wraps minimum. Hand-tighten, then snug with a wrench — about a quarter to half turn past hand-tight. Do not over-torque. The swivel needs to rotate freely after installation, so make sure you are tightening the fittings into the swivel body and not clamping down on the rotating joint.
After installation, test the rotation by hand. The swivel should spin smoothly with minimal resistance. If it feels stiff or gritty, back off the fittings and check that no tape or debris got into the bearing race.
Pressure test before running the job. Bring the system up to full pressure and inspect the swivel for leaks at both connections and at the rotating joint.
Maintenance and Replacement
Swivels are wear items. The seals inside eventually wear from constant rotation under pressure. Plan on inspecting your reel swivels at the start of every season and mid-season if you are running heavy volume.
Signs it is time to replace your hose reel swivel:
- Dripping or weeping at the rotating joint that does not stop when connections are re-taped
- Increased resistance to rotation — the reel is harder to crank
- Audible grinding or clicking when the reel turns
- Visible corrosion or pitting on the swivel body
- Hose is developing twist memory even with the swivel installed
A swivel that leaks or binds is no longer doing its job. At that point it is just an expensive elbow, and your hose is taking the same abuse it would without any swivel at all.
Swivel vs. No Swivel — Why It Matters
Running a hose reel without a swivel at the inlet is a guaranteed way to destroy hoses faster than necessary. Here is what happens: as the drum turns, the hose wraps around the inlet pipe. Each rotation adds one full twist to the hose. Over a 100-foot pay-out, the hose accumulates dozens of twists. Those twists create internal stress that weakens the wire braid, causes kinks, and eventually leads to a burst. The hose also develops a permanent spiral memory that makes it harder to handle, harder to reel, and more likely to tangle.
A quality reel swivel eliminates all of that. The hose feeds cleanly, reels smoothly, and lasts significantly longer because it is not fighting itself at every connection point.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this swivel work on both high pressure and low pressure reels?
Yes. The 5,000 PSI rating means it handles any hose reel in the pressure washing industry — from 500 PSI soft wash reels to 4,000+ PSI high pressure reels. For soft wash reels running chemicals, just make sure you flush the swivel with clean water at the end of each day to prevent chemical buildup in the seals.
Can I use this swivel with 1/2" fittings?
This swivel has 3/8" FPT ports. For 1/2" plumbing, you would need a bushing adapter on each side — but that adds restriction and potential leak points. For 1/2" systems, look for a swivel with native 1/2" ports.
How long does a hose reel swivel last?
With daily commercial use, expect 1 to 3 seasons depending on volume and how well you maintain it. Flushing debris out of the system, avoiding dry-cycling the reel, and not over-torquing the connections all extend swivel life.
Is this the same swivel that comes on GP A-frame reels?
General Pump A-frame reels use a similar style swivel at the inlet. This Super Swivel 5014 is a direct replacement or upgrade for the factory swivel on most A-frame reels.
Do I need a swivel at both ends of the reel?
At minimum, you need one at the inlet where the plumbing connects to the rotating drum. A second swivel at the outlet (where the hose exits to run to the gun) is beneficial but not always required — it depends on your reel design and how much the outlet hose needs to move.
